September 18, Stratton, ME - mile 1980.3

 Bigelow Mountain

Much to my surprise, I covered these 8 miles into town rather quickly today, and I was so pleased to make it here around 1:00 instead of 4:00, as I expected. My main goal had been to get here before the post office closed, so that I could get my mail drop. Not only did I get it, although I had to try twice because they were closed for lunch the first time, I managed to sort it and get some extra stuff sent back home before the PO closed as well.

So, as always, I've been running like crazy to get all my town chores done, and this town is even a bit harder because everything closes early. I raced from the laundromat to the PO, to the grocery store and finally the pizzeria, to get all my supplies and food before each one closed. Now I just feel exhausted and ready to sleep for about a week, but I have lots of sorting and packing and writing still to do. It always amazes me how stressful a day in town can be!

I talked to Tony for a while earlier and we have to start making arrangements for his coming up to climb Katahdin with me. WOW - it's getting close! And I'm really looking forward to the finish, too. For one thing, it's starting to get awfully cold outside these days!
