What an incredible camping spot I have tonight! I'm perched on the banks of a very loud mountain stream with the stars so bright overhead, I barely need a light to write. And best of all, I have it all to myself, although I was hoping Packa-Sandra would make it here, too. I suspect she's camped on top of the last mountain instead - it was where I originally thought I'd stop too. But I got an early enough start and the climbs today were easier than usual, so I decided to push on here, and make tomorrow's hike into town a little shorter. I'm really glad I did. The last climb down was steep like I haven't seen steep since Wildcat Mountain, and the first climb up tomorrow looks to be almost the same grade on the map. If that's the case, I'll be picking my way up there for a loooong time.
Speaking of climbs, I continue to think that my knees have hurt as much as they can going down these mountains...and I continue to be proven wrong! Luckily this arthritis pain reliever stuff that Tony sent does wonders for the pain - and luckily I've only a couple weeks left.
Tonight there was supposed to be a "class of 2001" thru-hiker party in Monson, but needless to say, I haven't made it. I was kind of hoping I'd be able to go when I heard about it, because seeing everyone would be loads of fun, but there's no way I'd hitch up that far just for a party. I'm sure there will be lots of celebrating whenever I get there! It's the last town before the end, basically the point at which you're "home free" Won't that be grand!
