July 1, Devil's Race Course Shelter - mile 1039.6
Well, I gave Doreen quite a ride for her first day! We covered just over 18 miles today, through hill & dale, got lost once, twisted & turned our way through boulder fields, went up & down the steepest hills I've seen since Tennessee & she took her first fall & had the "stranded turtle" experience - of laying on your back with a pack on & being utterly unable to move! But we also enjoyed some beautiful views of Maryland farm lands, drank a cold soda from the machines in a park we passed through & ate handfuls of blackberries.
Tonight we just barely beat a thunderstorm to get into the safety of this shelter, which I wouldn't ever stay in under normal circumstances, but which seems down right cozy tonight. We are here with Terrorist & her dad, Bald Eagle, who are both Irish, & we're having a very nice time talking about the A.T. & being new to back packing, since Bald Eagle only came on the trail two days ago, too. The rain is pounding off & on - on the tin roof above & we're all trying not to get caught in all the spiderwebs in here, but other wise it's not too bad.
