July 2, Tumbling Run Shelter - mile 1052.8

The adventure continues! What an amazing, action-packed day we had. After a very good night's sleep (to my surprise) with no mice activity at all, we climbed back up that mountain this morning bundled up in layers of polypro & fleece & anything else we had! It was nearly frigid this morning - I would guess some where in the 40's. But the storm cleared the air so that we could nearly see all the way to the ocean from our viewpoints today. It was absolutely breath taking!

Around mid-morning we came to Pen-Mar Park, which is on the state line, & had a soda since there was a machine there & we couldn't possibly pass up the opportunity. We shivered as we sat there to drink it, but we still enjoyed it. Just moments past the park was the Mason-Dixon line, so we took photos & did a dance of joy at crossing another state line. I'm so excited to be in Pennsylvania! The half-way point is just around the corner....

At noon, we came to a road crossing where a small sign said "meals, P.O., small store 1.5 miles total" & pointed to our right. Doreen has already been grimacing at her evening noodles & daily power bars with the weariness of some one who has been on the trail far longer than 2 days, so it didn't take much effort to talk her into a lunch run into town. To our dismay, however, it ended up being 1.5 miles each way, which we realized upon finally reaching the small sub shop & convenience store. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, though, & picked up some snacks "for the trail" before heading back out. But this time. I was not interested in walking that entire way back on the hot pavement, so I put out the trusty thumb. Doreen was a doubting Thomas & had no faith that any one would stop, but it didn't take long for a pickup to pull over. So we jumped in back for a quick, breezy lift back to the trail - her first hitch! How exciting!

Tonight promises to be another cold one, so we've got our tents set up instead of sheltering. Even though both of us are carrying winter sleeping bags, we know we'll be most warm & comfortable in the tents, unlike a lot of other folks who have been shivering all night long in their thin fleece bags.
