July 3, Milesburn Cabin area - mile 1070
We've stopped two miles short of the shelter tonight & camped in a shall clearing along side the trail instead, in a very lovely little spot, I must say. My bones were simply too tired to press on today & my ankle has been bothering much of the afternoon, so I'm hoping to avoid a problem with it by stopping now. Not only that, our destination tomorrow is a hostel, which doesn't open until 5 P.M. & we're only 12 miles away, so we still have plenty of time to get there.
Last night was indeed another cold one, but we both stayed toasty warm, while the shelter people nearly froze to death. I know I shouldn't enjoy other people's suffering, but it does give me a bit of satisfaction to be warm & cozy in my slightly heavier gear while the "lightweight" hikers are cold in their fleece blankets.
Today we were spoiled yet again when we came through a park at lunch time that had a small concession stand. My tummy was thrilled to have a small pizza, nachos & a fruit smoothie instead of my moldy bread that I was carrying. However, this could become an expensive habit if this trend continues! Judging by the guidebook, though, it seems to have come to an end for now. No problem, though, we're due for re-supply tomorrow & should have plenty of food for a while. The hostel tomorrow is located at the half-way point & the site of the "half-gallon challenge". The challenge is to eat a half gallon of ice cream upon arrival. I had always planned on participating, particularly since I can down ice cream like there's no tomorrow even when I'm not hiking. However, in the past three months I have gotten Ben & Jerry's pints of ice cream three times & have never been able to finish one in one sitting. So I am sadly accepting of the fact that I will not be able to join the Half Gallon club, but I'll probably still eat at least some ice cream while I'm there.
