Non giusticiare ritardi mentali iuccitare

Diciamo NO ad un omicidio pianificato. Aiutateci a salvare JOHNNY PAUL PENRY.


Johnny Paul Penry e un nostro amico, un uomo ritardato mentalmente che non
neanche in grado di capire perche mai lo stato del Texas voglia ucciderlo.

Johnny ha 44 anni. Il suo quoziente intellettivo e bassissimo, si
muove, parla e disegna come un bambino di sei anni. Non e facile
scrivergli e non facile comunicargli affetto: JOHNNY NON E' IN GRADO
DI SCRIVERE O LEGGERE.

Quando lo hanno arrestato, ha firmato(!) una confessione redatta da
altri. Ma non era a conoscenza di quanto ci fosse scritto.

Anche il Papa e intervenuto lo scorso anno in suo favore, chiedendo al
Governatore del Texas di voler concedere la clemenza a questo amico
sfortunato.

Ma il Texas ha respinto l'ultimo appello di Johnny....

Sono ormai oltre 20 anni che Johnny Paul Penry si trova nel braccio
della morte di HUNTSVILLE.

Vogliamo veramente che il nuovo Millennio si apra con la morte di un
ritardato mentale??
Sarebbe una vera barbarie....

Your State does not allow the use of capital punishment for Mentally Retarded people. We, as citizens from all over the world, concerned by the defence of Human Rights, are thankful for it.
Un fortunately, the State of Texas doesn't have the same views regarding the death penalty and the disabled. A 43 years-old man, named Johnny Paul Penry, deeply mentally retarded (IQ of a six year-old child), is about to be executed on january 13, 2000. He was convicted for a crime he commited, but he never understood what he had done.
During the trial, in 1990, the State psychiatrists and those called by his attorneys disagreed on several points, in many occasions. However, they totally agreed on the fact that this man "was a person of extremely limited mental ability, who seemed unable to learn from his mistakes". (Source: Excerpts from Penry v. Lynaugh)
In such an important case, we would like to ask you, as a human being, to ask the Governor of Texas, George W. Bush, to grant him clemency, and to commute his death sentence into life.

In case you would agree to do so and help us save a man who wouldn't be killed in any other country (this is absolutely forbidden by international law as you probably know), we would be very thankful for your courageous and humane action.
