Department of BOTANY Science College, Patna
The teaching of Biology began in Science College with the establishement of Biology Department in 1941. Later, in 1946, it was separated Zoology Departments. M. Sc. classes were started during the academic session 1948-50 under the chairmanship of Prof. L. C. Lacy.

At that time the emphasis was mainly on teaching but some faculty members were active in reserach and publishing scientific papers. Prof. R. P. Roy took over the reign of the deaprtment in 1953. Under his able leadership the department progressed in all directions and soon established its reputaiton at national and international level as an important centre of Cyntogenetics and Plant Pathology. This led to the grant of a major research project under PL - 480 programmee of Indo-American collaboration. Later the department received a number of reserach project from UGC, CSIR, DST etc. An interdisciplinary reserach scheme under the Ganga Basin Reserach Project had also been granted by DoE.

Finally, in August 1978, the UGC elevated the department to the status of centre of special assistance. In 1987, UGC selected the department for financial assistance under COSIST programme and granted a sum of Rs. 60.85 lacs for the development of infrastructure of international standard. Simultaneusly with the assistance of UGC, a new block of the life science with two well equipped laboratories one for Molecular Genetics and another for Plant Biosystematics were built up.
A number of faculty members obtained their degree from foreign laboratories viz late Prof. R. P. Roy (Cambridge), Prof. A. S. Yadav (London), Prof. A. S. Mehta (London), Prof. N. C. Mishra (Canada), Prof. D. N. Singh (USA), Prof. Umakant Sinha (Shefield, UK) and Dr. madhu Sudan Chaudhary (USA).
Uptil now the department has produced almost 150 Ph. D. The department has been updating the courses of study from time to time and introducing newer discipline like Biotechnology. Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biosystematics. Inspite of all odds the department has been active in reserach and has a reasonably well-equipped laboratories with Electron Microscope, M. 86 Microdensitometer, Flurescent Microscope, Beckman L8 80M Ultracentrifuge, Cart Leiss UV - VIS Spectro-photometer, four high speed refrigerated centrifuge, Low Temperature incubator, several autoclave, facilities for macro and micro-photography and many other sophisticated general laboratory equipments.
