	Department of PHYSICS Science College, Patna The Physics Deptt. is the nuclues of Science Colege, Patna. It has a two-storeyed structure. Previously, it had T-shaped but later on to accomodate separate lecture room for post-graduate (M.Sc.) students and research students, some additions were made on the southern side, bringing it to an assymetric H-shape. The ground floor has accomodation for M.Sc. lecture rooms, M.Sc. laboratories, research room, I.Sc. and B.Sc. lecture theatres adn a preparation room in between I.Sc. and B.Sc. lecture theaters, a musuem for apparatus and a library. This building in Science College had provision for a lift which is meant for the tranporation of heavy instruments. The upper floor has laobratories for I.Sc. and B.Sc. students. The PG Deptt. of Physics (Patna University) was created as a separate unit in the Science College in 1952.The PG level with specialisation in Adv. Quantum Mechanics, Radio Physics & Electronics, Spectroscopy and Solid State Physics. Facilities for reserach work leading to Ph. D. degrees are also provided here. Right from its inception, the department has been attracting the best among the students from all over the state because of its superior teaching, healthy atomosphere and excellent employment prospects. Every year, a good number of its students joined the Faculty of Patna University and other Universities of the state just after passing M. Sc. examination. Within a few years, some of them used to join Civil Services while some got scholarships from abroad for higher studies. Fresh vacancies were created year after year providing opportunities for infusion and vibrant. The trend continued till in their zeal for socialism, authorities found it more expendient to bring Science College and Physics Deptt. at par with other colleges in the state. The department is proud of having on its faculty in the past such stawarts as late Prof. Kamta Prasad, Prof. Shiv Parvati Prasad, Dr.B. N. Singh, Prof. G. P. Dubey, Prof. L. M. Chatterjee, Prof. M. N. Verma, Dr. S. P. Sinha, Dr. S. K. Dutta, Dr. H. N. Yadav, Dr. L. S. Singh, Prof. K. N. Mishra and Dr. B. B. Lal. Led by late Dr. H. N. Yadav, this department developed a renowned team of Teoretical Physicists. We are proud of the fact that its several alumni and scientists are of international repute. We have Dr. S. S. Jha at present Director of Tata Institue of Fundamental reserach. The Spectroscopy laboratory of the Physics Departmenty, Patna University has been developed to include LASER and Plasma experiments leading to a stage of reserach activities. At present we have facilities to conduct reserach in LASER production and its application. We have developed here following systems with an activefunding from Bihar Council of Science & Technology (Govt. of Bihar), Uma-Baleshwar Charitable Trust, Patna and the Third World Academy of Science, ITALY: - N2 - LASER System N2 - LASER pumped dye Laser Systems Vibration isolation table and hologram A study of density variation of liquid (water) using interference technique A study of an arc and N2 - Laser Channel plasma parameters. In the last thirteen years this has become an active centre for those who are desirous to work in the field of laser and plasma. Presently we also engaged in developing a low cost CO2 Laser system. It will be a sheer hypocrisy to say that everything is still fine. There have been a very few appointments after 1983. With dwindling employment opportunities, best students are not coming to the PG Deptt. In the year 2001, Computer Science Center of Science College, Patna was established to impart the education of B.Sc.- Hons. in Computer Applications (BCA) on the first floor of the Physics Department. It is equipped with 20 computers and well qualified faculty members. The Head of the Department of Physics Department, Science College is the ex-officio Co-ordinator of the center.
