History of Science College, Patna
The province of Bihar came into being in 1911, the Patna University in 1917 and Science College in 1927. Before 1927, Patna College, Patna (now a constituent unit of Patna University, famous for teaching of Arts Faculty) used to teach both Arts and Science for the degree examinations. The growth in number of science students and the need for the expansion of the Physics and Chemistry laboratories made it necessary for the Arts and Science departments to get separated. Patna College now confines itself to impart instruction in Arts subjects, the teaching in Science subjects being transferred to the Science College. At the meeting of the legislative council held on the 19th August 1924, the following resolution was moved: -
The council recommends to Government : -
- The new buildings be constructed for the Patna University,
- That such buildings be constructed on the land acquired for the purpose near Phulwari, and
- That the cost of such buildings should not exceed 50 lacs.
Amendments were moved to the resolution one recommending an expenditure of Rs. 26.00 lacs on or near the site of the present university office another recommending an expenditure of Rs. 20.00 lacs for the improvement of Patna College itself. The spirit of the second amendment formed the basis of the recommendation made to the Government by the Director of Public Instruction to separate Arts and Science teaching reserving Patna College for the former and building a new college for the latter. This recommendation was accepted by Government and sanction for opening the Science College, Patna from July 1927 was conveyed in Govt. letter No. 4875-E of 27th Dec., 1926. Thus it was that science classes, so long attached to Patna College, moved to a group of new buildings, not all complete, in July 1927. the buildings were fully completed by 1928 and they were formally declared opened on November 15, 1928 by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin. Hence, the 15th November is the Birth Day of Science College, Patna. On the occasion of Opening Ceremony of Science College, Patna on November 15, 1928; the vice Chancellor of Patna University read the address of welcome, which was presented to His Excellence the Viceroy.
Laboratories of Physics and Chemistry built and equipped at a cost of over 14 lacs were perhaps the fines in India and compared favourable with any in Europe at that time. These laboratories were each designed for the teaching of 20 post-graduate, 168 degree and 240 undergraduates students.
