With the AIVAS project a mysterious failure, Pern's stepsister planet, known as the Red Star, has returned to its old erratic orbit, bringing with it the terrible menace of Thread. Now, after two hundred Turns of clear skies, Pern is on the brink of yet another fifty-Turn Pass.
With Thread swiftly approaching, the queens of all the Weyrs have begun to bear larger clutches with which to populate Pern with its only effective defenders: the dragons. Nonetheless, the last Interval had produced more dragons than ever before and the new larger clutches threatened to overpopulate the Weyrs and overtax the Holds. Something had to be done. Filling this need, several parties led most often by junior goldriders departed in search of a new and usable location. While every Weyr sponsored a group, only one was successful in finding a location that fit all of the requirements. The expedition from Southern, led by Tateena, rediscovered the Far Western Continent and its possibilities. While the Far Western Continent had been long eschewed as a desolate and uninhabitable waste, the explorers found that to be true only in part. Much of the continent was verdant and rich in minerals and soil. On the western shore of the eastern half of the subdivided continent, the party discovered a large sheltered cove ideal for protecting the harbor. Some small distance in from this, past only a few foothills and almost too good to be true, was an extinct Weyr-capable volcano. The discovery sent all participants into a flurry of activity and after a mere sevenday most of the inland channel had been charted, as well as much or the rest of the continent. The continent was more vast than any had imagined and the possibilities were nigh endless. A nearby site across the channel promised to make an excellent Hold that one day might reach major status. At the end of the sevenday the group reluctantly yet elatedly headed back to their home Weyr to make their report. After hearing accounts and inspecting the charts of all the possible locations, the collective Weyrleaders granted Tateena's group permission to begin the Weyr. The Weyr, called (some might say misleadingly) Western Cove, was soon populated by riders and staff from every Weyr, with a similar distribution for the Hold across the channel and its adjacent Harper Hall. Now, after several months the Westerners' numbers are growing. Hold, Hall and Weyr become viable entities and none too soon. Thread is due soon and only then will the Weyr truly be put to test. |
