Case 1: Sean Hannity—It is not the newspapers' fault

7/5/2002

Sentry Over America: "Sean, the newspapers are not voluntarily going to print that story. Blame George Bush and his administration for not forcing them to print the story. They have had ample opportunities to mention this during major speeches and force the story on the American public."

On the July 3rd, 2002 Sean Hannity radio show, Sean lambasted the newspapers and the major networks for ignoring the story about the offer from Sudan to hand over bin Laden to the United States during Scumbag's regime.

Monsour Ijaz, a Pakistani-American freelance diplomat, has detailed this story numerous times while the mainstream press has ignored it. Now, Tim Carney, former Ambassador to Sudan, appeared on Hannity and Colmes July 2nd and confirmed the Ijaz story.

I called into the Sean Hannity show Wednesday afternoon while David Limbaugh was also on the show. I told Sean and David that "Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was the hottest item on TV. The American public was riveted to his every word during the initial press conferences about the war in Afghanistan. He could have brought this story up numerous times but he did not."

I also said "George Bush had two major occasions to mention this—around the time of his address to Congress following the September 11 attack and during his State of the Union Address."

Sean Hannity said that "the State of the Union and the speech to Congress after 911 was not the time and place to bring this out."

I told Sean that, of course, you can't be blunt about it in a speech like that but it still could have been mentioned. When Sean started talking about "dignity and such" I said:

"Sean, the Democrats act like attack dogs and sharks--they never care about dignity. The Republicans act like pacifists and always lose the PR campaign because of that tactic . . .

David Limbaugh then stepped in and said "he agreed with me and that he just published a column recently about that very same thing how the Republicans 'act like pacifists' . . . (and then there was some cross-talk).

I had to remind Sean Hannity that it was he who wondered "why the major newspapers and TV networks would not pick this story up" . . . I said "the Bush administration has been protecting Bill Clinton since day one. They let him off the impeachment related hook by giving him a pardon. Then, they did not prosecute pardongate. They fail to mention all the liability Scumbag has related to bin Laden in the 1990s and the failure to act on bin Laden's attacks, . . .

I was disappointed in Sean Hannity's failure to recognize that the liberal press will never voluntarily bring stories out negative to the RATs. The Bush people could at any time bring this story out during major speeches and it would force the story onto the front pages. Sean should know that.

David Limbaugh did agree and, in fact, mentioned the very theme I brought up in an earlier column he wrote as mentioned above.

Bush has the bully pulpit, Sean. He could use it to force the newspapers to print any story he wants. He could also use it to hang Clinton on a number of items. However, Bush and Ashcroft continue to protect Clinton.

This is a new section in the Sentry Over America family of sites.

It will include conversations I have, or my members or readers of Sentry Over America have, with syndicated hosts. If we disagree with the point by the host and, in plain words, the host just flat out misfired, we will publish the conversation. In addition, some misfires that Sentry or readers just hear will also be presented. Members and readers of the site are encouraged to send in their arguments for possible publication. If possible, some actual transcript would be helpful if you happened to have recorded your conversation. If not, please have the host's comments as accurate as you can remember. The theme and point is the key, however, not the actual words the host used.

If you speak with a talk show host and disagree with the outcome, or you hear your favorite conservative talk show host misfire, send in the comment, date of show, and your commentary, and your name ( actual, forum screen name, or state if you choose to remain anonymous), city and state. Selected submissions will be published.

Send us your essay on this topic or your conversation with a talk show host. Why didn't the host get it right?
