| The Road to Freedom & Peace
![]() The Victory Parade on 12 Setember 1945 at the Padang formally ended the brief but turbulent period of the Jaanese Occupation but peace was bought at a very high price. To those who survived the war, the mere mention of the Japanese Occupation brought vivid memories of brutal killings and tortures, ruthless confiscation of properties, acute shortage of essential foodstuff and loss of freedom. Although ths period was relatively short, lasting from February 1942 to September 1945, the scars of the brutalities meted out by the Japanese soldiers remain deeply etched in the minds of those who lived throught it. However, the one Japanese militant most war victims in Singapore would remember would be General Yamashita Tomoyuki. This is the Japanese general who defeated the British in Malaya and Singapore during World War II has always been identified with secretly-buried hoards of gold bullion and treasures looted from South-East Asia. And as time passed, it came to be known as Yamashita's Gold. The physical and psychological sufferings inflicted by the Japanese Military Administration on the people of Singapore are beyond the comprehension of our younger generation brought up in a safe and secure environment. It will be difficult for young Singaporeans to really understand the meaning of deprivation. Therefore, this hopefully will and might bridge the experience gap.
