Danica Patrick
- DJ!
She's been making headlines since early June when she became one of only a few women to ever qualify for the Indy 500. Not only did Danica Patrick qualify, she had the fastest time on the day of the time trial.
While this seems like a victory for women everywhere, a woman successfully competing with the men, it caused an uproar in the racing world, which is dominated by men. Just before the running of the Indianapolis 500, Nascar driver Robby Gordon spoke out against Patrick stating that she had an unfair advantage due to her low body weight.
"The lighter the car, the faster it goes," Gordon said. "Do the math. Put her in the car at her weight, then put me or Tony Stewart in the car at 200 pounds and our car is at least 100 pounds heavier."
While this may in fact be true, Robby Gordon did not protest when Canadian racer Jacques Villeneuve won the Indy 500 in 1995 he weighed only 146lbs, only 20lbs more then Patrick.
Patrick has also faced harsh criticism from Formula 1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone who stated that "Women should be all dressed in white like all other domestic appliances."
Considering that Patrick races in the IRL, and not Formula 1, the comments came as something as a shock to Patrick. Ecclestone first made the comments during an interview at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, then called to apologize to Patrick. He proceeded to reiterate what he had said before, confusing Patrick further.
Many in the media are encouraging Ecclestone to give it up because he is clearly in the wrong. As for Patrick, she has maintained her dignity throughout the whole affair, continuing to go out and do her job just like any other driver on the IRL circuit.
There are many that will say that Patrick's fame and notoriety are due in large part to her beauty. It has to be faced; the woman is H-A-W-T hot. However, she has done something no woman before has done; being considered a serious contender on the IRL circuit and having a serious team with serious money backing her up.
So, while Danica Patrick may not be the most successful rookie in the IRL this season she is definitely well on her way to being the best known.
