Shero Of The Month - August 2005
Judy Blume
- Julia
A lot of Sheroes are probably going out to buy Meg Cabot's new book, Ready or Not, which is mostly about Sam deciding whether or not to have sex. But guess what? That book, and most others in YA fiction today, wouldn't have been there if it hadn't been for Judy Blume.
Why is she so special? She was just about the first writer to include some of the things teens and pre-teens think about. She wrote the truth, instead of covering it up, writing about bras, periods, masturbation, families that weren't so perfect, and yes, even teens having sex. She says her daughter asked her to write a book about teens that had sex and "didn't die."
With all these books came an incredible backlash. People knew these things really happened, but tried to cover it up for their kids. Judy Blume is one of the biggest censored writers of the 20th century because of this. She's come out against the censorship, and became a big free speech activist. And this is why Judy Blume is my Shero of the Month.
