How to Get a Steady Income (for real!)

By: Julia

Maybe you haven't reached the magical age of 16. Maybe you have. But either way, you probably want money. I can help you with that. I like making sweet moola with Uncle Rico too.

I want a real job.

Okay, so if you're 16 or over, you can work as much as you want. Find a good "first job" place, somewhere like working at the mall or a daycare center, somewhere willing to hire teens. I wouldn't try being a waiter/waitress, since that type of job is demanding and hard to handle. Go to several perspective employers, ask for an application, and fill it out. If they call you back for an interview, then they're interested. Always wear nice, clean-cut clothes for a job interview. Ask questions about your pay and hours, and what's required and expected of you. Then thank them and tell them you'd really like to work there.

If you're 14-16, you can apply for a part-time job if you get a work permit. However, many employers aren't willing to go out and get a work permit for a 14 year old.

I just need a small, but steady job

So find something that you can do. Babysitting? Mowing lawns? Computer services? Make flyers and distribute them around the neighborhood, that states what you do, why you're good at it, what you charge (generally, not more than 15$ an hour, but there are some exceptions), and your contact information. A great way to make an impression and build up your business is to take your first few customers, and offer your services free if you give some recommendations.

All I need is an allowance

Well, that's great, but you should be willing to earn it. Think of what you can do around the house, and charge a small fee for it, add up how many times you'll be doing that a week, and the result is your weekly allowance. For example: 2$ to do the dishes and 2$ to do the laundry. Laundry twice a week and dishes four times a week equals 10$ a week for allowance. Discuss this with your parents, showing them why it's an appropriate amount, and why you need the money, and they'll probably give in.

I hope this has helped you make some cash and "learn the value of a dollar." (Hint: It's more than 99 cents)
