Democracy
With the discovery of Invention your civilization advances to age of Renaissance.
It's 630 A.D. and I changed from republic to democracy. Democracy is even tougher than republic since unrest among people grows even faster. All your cities should have a Temple by now. If you experience further trouble, try building Colosseums in rebelling cities or one of the wonders that reduce unhappiness.
Also, every unit that is not in friendly city causes two citizen in unit's home city to be unhappy. As said before, we will later reduce that by building Police Stations or wonder of Women's Suffrage.
However, democracy has quite a few advantages compared to republic. Trade (and therefore science) is further increased. You can set taxes to any rate you want. In addition, cities and units under democracy are immune to any kind of bribery and corruption.
I set my tax rate to:
10% Taxes
90% Science
0% Luxuries
Scientists now discover new technology every 5 turns. If you have enough cities and a Library in at least one third of them, your scientists should be similarly fast. I'm going to change the tax rate to 20/80/0 soon so I won't go completely broke.
Leonardo's Workshop
I've finally built Great Wall and made peace with troubling Carthaginians. I'm building Great Library as well. (But Carthaginians beat me to it).
I started building Leonardo's Workshop in Odessa. Leonardo's Workshop is one of the most important wonders in the game. It automatically upgrades an obsolete unit. It will change Phalanx into Pikemen (if you discovered Feudalism) or into Musketeers (if you discovered Gunpowder) and later into Riflemen. It will also upgrade Settlers into Engineers when we discover Explosives.
Make sure that you build Leonardo's Workshop if you can.
Railroad
One of the most important civilization advances is undoubtfully Railroad. With the help of railroads units move with no cost. That means if you build a railroad, connecting all of your cities, you can bring a unit to any city in just 1 turn! Railroads also increase shield and trade production by 50 percent.
Discover Railroad and start building it (with Settlers) as fast as you can.
Railroad also cancel the effects of Hanging Gardens wonder. I had a civil disorder in almost every city - in one twice in a row and my government collapsed. You should be careful about that. Build Michelangelo's Chapel or Colosseums to prevent them.
Defense
Try to build City Walls in as many of your cities as you can. Or do like I did - build Great Wall which will provide City Walls in every city you own until the discovery of Metallurgy.
Phalanx will soon become unsatisfactory defense units. With Feudalism we gain Pikemen, but these are really not much better than Phalanx - we need stronger units. Discover Gunpowder and gain Musketeers. Build Leonardo's Workshop and Phalanx defending your cities will be automatically upgraded to Musketeers.
Buildings
I believe in this are the most important buildings are Aqueduct, Colosseum and Bank. Aqueducts allow your cities to grow over level 8, Colosseums increase happiness among your people and Banks increase taxes/luxury output.
Wonders
The most important wonders of Renaissance are:
Leonardo's Workshop | Replaces obsolete units with equivalent modern ones. |
Copernicus' Observatory | Increases science out of city where built by 50 percent. |
Magellan's Expedition | Increases the movement rate of all sea units by two. |
Shakespeare's Theatre | Makes all citizens in a city content. No citizen in that city will ever be unhappy again. |
Michelangelo's Chapel | Counts as a Cathedral in each city. |
Note: You don't have to build these wonders like right away. Wonders, which have effects that never expire (such as Magellan's Expedition, Michelangelo's Chapel...) can be built any time.
