The Peach and Taupe Escapade

Or

When Fabrics Call Out!

It all started when I bought what the thrift store manager called "the ugliest dress I've ever seen". She asked me to show her what I made from it because she didn't believe that "anything pretty could come from that."

The dress was peach moire with peach lace over the bodice, and lace sleeves. I have to agree it was pretty awful. I threw it in the washer and dryer as I do most of my thrift store finds. When I was folding it, I placed it on top of a pile of taupe colored fabrics. I swear I actually heard the pile shout at me - "We want to be a vest!"

I went right to my fabric bins and pulled out all of the peach, taupe, and ivory that I could find. Then I hit the lace and ribbon stash. I was surprised at how much I had.

My first project was a vest for myself. The piecing and embellishing of the vest went pretty fast, but when I went to look for fabric for the lining and back - no luck. I finally found a piece of taupe rayon 100 miles from home.

After finishing my vest, I still had a ton of fabrics and embellishments gathered so I decided to make my 4-year-old neice, Haley, a vest for her birthday. She has been a reluctant model, but I hope to get a photo of her wearing the vest soon.

My next project was even smaller. I decided that Haley's American Girl doll needed a matching vest. They look adorable wearing their vests, and I hope to have a photo of both of them in the near future. For now, I do have a picture of the doll vest. I laid it on the scanner. The detail seems to show up best for me with this direct method.

Details from my vest.

The meandering chain stitching with the "eyes" in this detail was inspired by the CrazyQuilt Paper Stitch Exchange.

This pattern was in one ofEvening Star Design's Crazy Quilt Club packages.

The large spiderweb rose was made from rayon seam binding.

I put these as a separate link because each image is over 80K.
