Movies can generate thrilling action and suspense. It can bring you to the edge of your
seat. (Have you seen Speed?) But a comic book? Where the images aren’t thrown at
you at lightning speed or the sound doesn’t bang on your ear drums? This wasn’t a fight against a physical bad guy. This was a fight against time. Imagine your favorite characters in a jet airplane that’s falling apart as it freefalls into the atmosphere, straigh through an electrical storm. The controls are in flames in the cockpit. And a special passenger is going into cardiac arrest. And you have “Nightmares Persist,” the conclusion of the Fatal Attractions event. Large lettering and plenty of exclamation marks expertly took the place of screams and explosions. Adam Kubert’s nightmarish art kept the reader’s eyes wide open as Wolverine’s life was at stake, the plane’s hatch was breaking away, the lightning was operating on the plane’s hull. Pure excitement. Kudos to Hama and Kubert. |
