Born the illegitimate daughter of Lady Ellen
Hayden, then twenty, and Lord Richard Marshall, then thirty-six, Belinda was soon legitimized
but was raised more under her mother's influence. She inherited bitterness, haughtiness, and conceitedness from her mother and her
appearance from her father's family. Her face closely resembles Richard's and John Henry's, and her
brown hair makes her resemble some of John Henry's children. The way she does her hair and wears her clothing makes her a stately
beauty. She is left even more bitter when her father remarries and leaves her several months' vacation at Belleterre having alienated
herself from her family. Suddenly, during the London season of 1876, Belinda started spending time with Carey's group of friends. She soon singled Frank Pritchett out and managed to
get him drunk at a party. She made sure several people saw them enter a room. Frank did the honorable thing and married her, but
Belinda half-confirmed Carey's suspicions when accused that she was already pregnant with another man's child. After the ceremony,
Belinda left with Frank for India, where he was to be an army chaplain.
