John Henry Marshall
John Henry Marshall was born in England, the third son of a duke. When he was twenty-three, he travelled to France to enter into an
arranged marriage. Little did he know that he and Elizabeth would fall in love instantly. Upon returning
to England, John Henry took over one of his father's estates. He and Elizabeth lived there twelve years. They invested money in
several profitable ventures, using funds from Elizabeth's father and an inheritance left to John Henry by his maternal grandfather. For
a change of pace, John Henry moved his family to Nevada in 1860 and invested in the silver mining industry, opening several hotels
and purchasing half of two profitable mines. When gold was found in the Boise Basin in 1862, JohnHenry was one of the first men to
invest in it. He began constructing Belleterre then, and moved his family there in 1863. He let
his mines and other businesses run themselves, and started raising cattle on his new ranch. Educated for four years at Oxford, John
Henry took a two-year Grand Tour. An intelligent man, he encouraged his children to read and learn to play music. He and Elizabeth
educated their children in languages, music, history, etc. He sent those who wanted to go to boarding school, university, and Europe.
John Henry speaks English, French, Latin, Greek, and Italian. He is of medium height, has a "beefy" build, and a deep voice. He has
dark, slightly greying hair; nearly black, sparkling eyes; and a loving smile. He enjoys riding horses and being outdoors, but is
increasingly inactive. He travels often for business, sometimes taking his children or grandchildren with him.
Elizabeth Marshall
Born Elizabeth Anne de Gironde, Elizabeth was born in France to a rich French aristocrat and an English noblewoman. She grew up
on a vineyard in the south of France with an older sister and a younger brother. She was educated and refined, Elizabeth speaks
French, English, Latin, Greek, Italian, and Spanish. She also plays the piano and the violin beautifully and taught her children to play
both. She had a sheltered childhood, playing with her brother and sister and the children of the servants at her family's vineyard. She
wasn't pleased when her father announced that he'd arranged a marriage for her, but changed her tune when she first met
John Henry. Elizabeth enjoys singing, embroidery, gardening, and walking. Her cocker spaniels are a
great joy to her. She writes to her sister and brother often. Elizabeth has smooth, slightly wavy black hair; deep blue eyes; and full
red lips. She is slightly taller than John Henry, slender, and full-figured. Her older sister, Juliette, had a child out of wedlock. It
caused a rift in the family, because Juliette would never allow Elizabeth to adopt the child. Alicia travelled
to Liberty Creek on her own, and was welcomed by her family. Elizabeth's younger brother, Samuel, was a French diplomat to North
Africa. After he was killed there, his only daughter, Lise Anne was sent to Liberty Creek. She
was accompanied by Eugénie Arneau, Marietta's mother and Elizabeth's
best friend, who lost her husband at the same time.
William "Will" Marshall
William John Henry Marshall was born in England to John Henry and Elizabeth
Marshall. He had a happy childhood, and enjoyed both his life in England and the States. He left for boarding school in Connecticut
when he was fourteen, and went to Yale when he was sixteen. He returned home and worked with his father for a year before going
to work in Paris with his uncle. While there, he met Marietta Arneau, the daughter of hismother's best
friend. They married at her home in front of her family and some of his before honeymooning all over Europe. They returned to
Idaho and stayed at Belleterre while their home was being built, having Anne almost a year after
their marriage. Will has dark, thick, wavy brown hair; dark blue eyes; and a tall, muscular figure. He is intelligent and has a good
business mind. He spends most of his time doing business, but also enjoys riding, hunting, and fishing. Will and Marietta finally
moved into their own home in late October. Will often accuses Nick of making passes at Marietta, but nothing like that has ever
occured.
Philip Elliot III
Born in England to wealthy, untitled parents, Philip was educated at Oxford and worked with his father in England until he was
twenty-four. When he married Libbie Marshall, he moved to America so she could be with her family. He
did business for his father there, as well as taking over a sheep ranch near Belleterre. He is away from home often, but doesn't like to
be. Philip is not very tall, only a half inch taller than Libbie. He has thick blond hair, blue eyes, and is quite slender. He isn't as
"rugged" as the Marshall men, and doesn't often do work that involves getting dirty. The only outdoor activity he takes part in with much
enthusiasm is the yearly trips he takes with Will and Nick Marshall and Benjamin Kincaid.
He and Libbie have four children. When Philip's sister, Lydia, got married to
Christopher Marshall, Philip was angry at first, but he soon came to accept the idea. Philip and Libbie will soon move to England, leaving Christopher
and Lydia in charge of their ranch.
