Welcome to the SLUDGE REPORT Sewer committee meets - blind leading blindIt was the usual case of the blind leading the blind at this week's meeting of the Sooke Council's sewer committee. Only a couple of councillors - the Farmers - were interested enough to show up, along with the mayor. The developers on the committee were there also to get in their two cents worth. The poor babies still haven't figured out how they will charge for sewer hook-up and operating costs. In fact they still can't agree on the boundaries. Tom Day the administrator figures that the town will be in for a bonanza of bucks once the $24 million grant they have applied for is approved because he believes construction costs will come below estimates leaving the area to be served even larger than hoped for - and at the same time dumping even more treated sewage to feed the fish and wash up onto our shores. One theme ran through the meeting - when the sewers are in property values will skyrocket, subdivisions will flourish and the developers will get rich. In fact the consultant referred several times to including land "ripe for development" within the sewer boundaries. Incidentally the mayor figures that it will be a long time before Saseenos, where he lives, is served by sewers. He has just spent thousands fixing up his own septic system. |
