The construction of this gothic Cathederal began in 1296 and was completed 140 years later, 1436. This church is considered to be the 3rd largest of the Christian world after St.Peter's in ROme and St.Paul's in London. Arnolfo Di Cambio began construction, Filippo Brunelleschi completed the Cathederal and Emilio DeFabris put the finishing touches on this Cathederal by decorating the facade in marble.

At the young age of 26, Michelangelo was asked by the Florentine Republic to sculpt a figure. Michelangelo had firm beliefs of what "ideal beauty " was. The result of his studies, theories and fantasies resulted in in the "David". He took 3 years to complete this masterpiece and later "David" was placed in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. The actual "David" is found in a museum but a replica is found in the Piazza della Signoria.

This was dedicated to St.John the Baptist patron Saint of Florence. This baptistry is the oldest building in the city. Dante the famous poet was baptized here. There are 3 sets of doors to this Baptistry....the door known as "Ghiberti's Paradise" shows stories fromthe Old Testament, the other dooor by Ghiberti show stories from the New Testament and the southern doors showed relief stories of St.John the Baptist, the Cardinal and Theological Virtues.

The plan of the Belltower was designed by Giotto. He began the work in 1334 and continued to work until his death in 1337. Andrea Pisano,and, afterwards, Francesco Talenti continued the project....it was completed in 1359.This Belltower is located beside the Cathederal.

Dante Alighieri, a well known poet in Florence wrote the masterpiece "La Divina Commedia" or the Divine Comedy. He was born in Florence in the year 1265 and he died in 1321.

The Palazzo Vecchio or the "The Old Palace" is located in Piazza della Signoria. The construction of the Palace began in 1298 and was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. One can see above the great clock at the base of the tower, the window of the "Alberghetto" which was the cell in the 15th century for the imprisonment of Cosimo the Elder. For 10 years the Grand Duke Cosimo1 resided in this Palace.
