VENICE

(VENEZIA)

This city is so amazing and is considered to be one of the most romantic spots in the world. This city is surrounded by water and has so many bridges!!! The Grand Canal (where the gondolas are docked) is Venice's main traffic artery. The main means of transportation in this lovely city are motorboats, waterbuses, gondolas or on foot. Cars can be found on the westernmost island. The smaller canals are crossed by more than 400 small foot bridges. The most famous being the 16th century Bridge of Sighs, which links the Ducal Palace to the state prison! I was told that each foot bridge you cross you are going from one island to another!!!! There are three major bridges that cross the Grand Canal....one being the Rialto Bridge, the other being the Accademia Bridge and the third i don't remember. Below i have included some fantastic pictures of some of the amazing sites in this charming city. I think everyone should at least once in their lives visit this city.....you will not want to leave.....i didn't!!!!!

Santa Maria della Salute

This basilica was built in the 9th century and was the place where Doges were ordained. This biulding is a must see.....the architecture is breath taking!!! One thing to look out for are the pigeons.....there are so many of them!!!! Especially in St. Marks Square!!!!!

This bridge is from the late 500's. On one side of the bridge is the Doge's Palace (where Council members held meetings and trials) and on the other side of the bridge is the state prison. Trials were held in the Doge's Palace and those convicted were brought to the state prison. I learned that Casanova stayed at this prison!

This Church was built in gratitude for the end of the plague...thus it's name! It is located off the Grand Canal and the inside is just as beautiful as the outside!!!

Piazza San Marco beholds such sites as Basillica of San Marco(St. Mark's Basillica) and Palazzo Ducale (Palace of the Doges). When looking directly at Basillica San Marco, Palazzo Ducale is located on the right. If standing in Piazza San Marco, you will notice a Large bell tower that was rebuilt in the 12th century, this bell tower is named Campanile of San Marco, and it was used to stand guard over the basilica as well as the palace. Piazza San Marco is perhaps also known for its abundance of pigeons. There are many vendors standing around the piazza selling tourists bags of pigeon food.

One of the great architectural masterpieces of Jacopo Sansovino is this magnificent Library also known as (Marciana). It was initiated in 1537 and finished after the death of the architect (1570) by Vincent Scamozzi.

These are a few ofthe homes that can be found along the Grande Canale.
