Viacom ('mother' of Paramount) have begun shutting down Startrek WWW sites because of supposed Copyright infringements. This would leave the Microsoft 'official' site the only place where Startrek material would be available on the Internet, creating a monopoly. To get access to the Microsoft site you have to

1. Be running Microsoft Windows 95
2. Be using Microsoft Internet Explorer
3. Be a member of MSN (Microsoft Network)
4. Pay a US$6.95 fee per month

I see this as an attempt to control and exploit for their own benefit something they DO NOT UNDERSTAND. There are better ways to handle a copyright situation than to be forcing people to simply shut down a site. Most Startrek web sites are NON-PROFIT, fan run and supported areas. They are places to share and expand your love of Startrek and to get in contact wiht other people who feel the same way. We are not trying to undermine Paramount or Viacom in any way. With proper acknowledgement of the copyright on names/designs etc. why should a site be forced by brute strength to shut down???
