You can use MS Internet Explorer to FTP (upload and download) files to GeoCities. It is simple and easy to use, and best of all, you probably already have it installed. The Sections on this page describe how to perform the various FTP functions using MS Internet Explorer. For a list of directories to upload, visit my Directories page.

Netscape Note: Netscape Navigator also supports FTP, but is limited in it's capabilities.

Security Warning: If you have used your browser for FTP, make sure you close it when you are all done. To remove your password from the browsers memory cache.

Prerequisites

You must have the Address bar and Standard Buttons bar enabled in Internet Explorer. To enable these toolbars, click on the View Menu, then select the Toolbars sub-menu, and make sure that the Standard Buttons bar and Address bar are checked. If not, click on them with your mouse to enable them.

Connect

In the Address field (the Address bar at the top), enter the following URL, replacing membername, with your GeoCities member name:

ftp://membername@ftp.oocities.com

Press enter, and a dialog box will popup, asking for your password. Enter your GeoCities password, and push the Login button. Internet Explorer will then display a list of your Files and Folders at GeoCities (where it normaly displays a web page).

Netscape Note: You must include your GeoCities address in the URL as follows: ftp://membername@ftp.oocities.com/Neighborhood/Avenue/1234/

Disconnect

To make sure that you are disconnected from GeoCities, when you are done. On the Standard Buttons bar (toolbar), push the Up Up button, until Internet Explorer returns to the default Home page.

Netscape Note: To disconnect, push the Home button on the toolbar.

Navigating Folders

Note: Folders and Sub-Directories are the same thing, a Folder is a visual representation of a Sub-Directory.

To Open a folder at GeoCities, just double-click on the folder icon, and the sub-directory will be displayed. To return to the parent directory when you are in a sub-directory, on the Standard Buttons bar (toolbar), push the Up Up button

Netscape Note: Do a single-click to open a folder, and to return to the parent directory, click on Up to a higher directory link.

Uploading Files

Note: GeoCities restricts you to 2 levels of sub-directories on a free homesite.

In Internet Explorer, navigate to the folder that you want to upload into. Then open Windows Explorer (file manager), go to the directory containing the files you want to upload. Then select the files and folders you want to upload. To select a range of files, select the first file by clicking on it with your mouse, then hold down the shift key, and click on the last file (shift-click). To add or remove a single file from the selection, hold down the ctrl key, and click on the file (crtl-click).

To upload your selected files, simply drag them from Windows Explorer and drop them into Internet Explorer (drag and drop - click and hold your mouse button on the selected files, then move the mouse to drag the files, and drop by releasing your mouse button).,

Netscape Note: You can only drag and drop files, folders aren't allowed.

Create a Folder

The create folder option in Internet Explorer doesn't appear to work at GeoCities, but you can create one this way. In Internet Explorer, navigate to where you want to create the folder. Then open Windows Explorer to create an empty folder, and click your right mouse button. A pop-up menu will appear, select the New menu item, then select the Folder sub-menu item. A folder will be created, you can then rename the folder to what you want by typing in the new name. Then drag and drop the Folder from Windows Explorer to Internet Explorer.

Netscape Note: Folder operations are not allowed, you must use the GeoCities File Manager utility.

Rename a File or Folder

To rename a file or folder, hold down the alt key, and click on the file or folder with your mouse, the name will be highlighted for editing, and you can type in the new name. Note, these are the same procedures you use to rename files or folders in Windows Explorer.

Netscape Note: File Rename operations are not allowed, you must use the GeoCities File Manager utility.

Downloading Files

In Internet Explorer, select the files and folders you want to download (using the same file selection techniques used in Windows Explorer for uploading files, see above). Then click your right mouse button on one of the selected files (or folder). A pop-up menu will appear, select the Copy To Folder... menu item. A dialog box will open, where you can browse to the folder where you want to save the files, then press the Ok button.

Netscape Note: You can only download 1 file at a time, using the Save Link As menu option on the popup menu.

Delete Files or Folders

In Internet Explorer, select the files and folders you want to delete. Click your right mouse button on the selected files or folders, on the pop-up menu select Delete.

Netscape Note: Delete operations are not allowed, you must use the GeoCities File Manager utility.
