ANGEL (ANGELUS=evil/LIAM) Born in 1726 in Galway, Ireland, as Liam, Angelus led a life of 'drinking and whoring', as his father put it. His father did not approve of Liam's frivolous lifestyle, and was ashamed of how his son had turned out. |
But in the year 1753, after being thrown out of a pub in Galway one night, Liam spied a noblewoman alone in an alley. He approached her and asked her what a lady of her station was doing in an alley near a pub. She reported that she was lonely, and after this Liam offered himself as her escort. He told her that he had never seen much of the world, and at that, the woman turned excitedly telling him that she could show him the world, along with things he could never imagine. She told him to close his eyes. This he did, and at that, her face morphed into that of vampire. She fed off Liam, and then made him feed on her demonic blood. This woman was the vampire Darla, a demon spawned from the vampire known as the Master, the leader of the vampiric sect known as the Order of Aurelius. |

And so started the union that would last almost a century and a half. When Angel rose from his grave a vampire, Darla was there waiting for him. Angelus killed his family and stayed with Darla, travelling around, but always staying somewhere with a view - Darla always loved a view. In 1760, Angelus was introduced by Darla to the Master, in the underground catacombs of the Order of Aurelius in London. Angelus ridiculed the Master's nose, and the fact that he lived underground. Furius at Angelus' insolence, the Master deigned to teach him some respect by battering Angelus around the room. Angelus told Darla she deserved the view she so loved, and he took her away from the Order. The Master didn't stop him. He gave Angelus and Darla a century together at most. |
Staying together for over one hundred years, Angelus eventually bored of his life with Darla. He needed something new, and Darla provided him with that. One evening in 1860, Darla pointed out a young woman. Angelus immediately sensed her power - she could see into the future. This young woman was Drusilla. Soon afterwards, posing as a priest in a confessional, Angelus heard Drusilla tell of her gift. She said that her mother told her that it was a curse. Angelus told Drusilla that was true, that Drusilla was a spawn of Satan. |

Angelus told her that she should just give in to the evil that was her destiny. Drusilla refused. She told him that she wanted to be good and pure. She pleaded with Angelus, still thinking him a priest, to help her. He did, but not in the way she wanted. Angelus became obsessed with the young Drusilla. He enacted every possible kind of mental torture on the young woman, killing all who she loved. He followed her to the convent to which she fled to escape him, tinkering on the edge of insanity. After killing the nuns, Angelus made Drusilla into a vampire, with her now fully demented. |
Drusilla joined Angelus and Darla on their rampage through Europe. It was in London in 1880 that Drusilla told Angelus that she was lonely - that Angel only ever paid attention to Darla. Angelus responded by telling Dru that she needed a playmate. It was on this night that Drusilla brought William, or Spike as he was to become known, into their unholy family. From the very beginning, there was a rivalry between Angelus and Spike. Angelus taught Spike various things about the hunt, including to always guard his perimeter. But Spike was a difficult student. He was constantly getting himself and his companions into trouble. Angelus warned him that if he kept up his attitudes, that he would find himself killed by either an angry mob or a Slayer. |
After travelling with his family for some time, one night, while Spike and Dru were out, Darla brought Angelus a gift. It was another girl - a gypsy, the favourite of her clan, the Kalderash. Angelus fed off her, but in doing so incited the wrath of the Kalderash elders. They conjured up the perfect punishment for him - they restored his human soul. Wrought with unspeakable guilt over the attrocities he commited as a vampire, Angelus fled to Darla. Disgusted, Darla threw Angelus out. |
Wandering alone, Angelus eventually decided that he could not live isolated. He sought out Darla again, stowing away on a steamer ship and following the corpses all the way to China, where the Boxer Rebellion was already in full-swing. The year was 1900. Angelus begged Darla to give him a second chance - to let him show her that he still the same old Angelus, that he hadn't submitted to his human soul. Darla agreed, but after careful observation, she saw that Angelus was only feeding off criminals - murderers and rapists, theives and scoundrels. Angelus denied the accusation. |
To prove himself, Darla asked that kill the baby of a missionary family who Darla had killed. Angelus could not do it, and fled with the infant so Darla could not kill it herself. Angelus was now truly dead. Discarding his demonic name, Angelus was from then on known as Angel. He fled to America, where there were no recorded archives mentioning the death of any person at his hands since his arrival. |
In 1996, he was approached by a demon sent from the Powers That Be, a mysterious and unknown power that keeps the balance between the good and the wicked. This demon was Whistler. He rescued Angel from his miserable existence, roaming the streets of San Francisco eating rats. Whistler took Angel to Los Angeles, where they witnessed Buffy Summers, the new vampire Slayer, being approached by Merrick of the Watcher's Council. Angel was given the task of protecting Buffy. He followed her when she moved to Sunnydale, and introduced himself as a friend, but never said that he was a friend of hers. Angel submitted himself to fighting evil alongside Buffy, quickly falling completely in love with her. |
He killed Darla to save Buffy, and helped her and her friends kill the Master. It wasn't until a year later that Angelus returned. Spike and Drusilla had turned up in Sunnydale, and their vampire allies had nearly succeeded in killing Buffy and Angel. Fleeing from their advesaries, Buffy and Angel hid at Angel's residence, wher they finally submitted to their desires and made love. Big mistake. The gypsy curse of the Kalderash was such that if Angel were to experience a single moment of happiness - of contentment - then the soul that had been restored to him would be taken again. |
Angelus was back, and the first thing he did was seek out Spike and Drusilla. For the next few months, Angel taunted Buffy and her friends, doing such things as killing Willow's fish, harassing Buffy's mother, and finally killing Jenny Calendar. |
