SPIKE (WILLIAM THE BLOODY)

Spike began life as a mortal that went by the name of William. He was an amateur poet who lived in London, whose work was apparently quite awful. William was transformed into a vampire in the year 1880 by the vampire Drusilla, who was lonely. Drusilla by this time had been a vampire for twenty years and had been travelling with her sire, Angelus, and his sire, Darla.

Spike and Drusilla fell completely in love and traversed Europe together with Darla and Angel. Spike's impulsive nature was always getting himself and his companions into trouble. One day, Angelus warned Spike that if he didn't start acting more quietly, he'd be taken out by an angry mob or a Slayer. Spike had never heard of a Slayer, and became obsessed with them after this. In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion in China, Spike killed his first Slayer. It was she who gave him the scar over his left eye. In 1977, while living in New York, Spike killed his second Slayer on a subway train. Her name was Nikki, and after killing her, Spike took her black leather coat, which is the one he still wears to this day.

William became known as Spike due to his practise of torturing his victims with railroad spikes.
Spike and Drusilla spent time in Paris, Spain, New York, China, Romania (where they killed the Gypsy tribe that cursed Angelus), New York, and settled down in Prague, in the modern Czech Republic. However, the locals eventually became suspicious of the two. They formed a mob and attempted to capture and burn Drusilla. Spike rescued her and took the severely weakened Drusilla to Sunnydale, California. He hoped that with the presence of a Hellmouth in Sunnydale, Drusilla could be restored to full strength.

Spike killed the Anointed One, the local vampire leader, and took over the Sunnydale underground. His attempts to bring Sunnydale under his power where constantly thwarted by the slayer, Buffy, and her friends.
Spike sent the bounty hunters of the Order of Taraka against Buffy, while he prepared to restore Drusilla to full strength with an ancient ritual which would see Drusilla's blood fused with that of her sire, Angel. He was successful, however, Buffy interrupted the ritual and after extensive fighting, caused the church in which the ritual was being performed to collapse on Spike and Drusilla. Still reeling from her restoration, Drusilla was unharmed, but Spike was severely injured.
Wheelchair bound, Spike had his vampire lackies bring together the dismembered pieces of the demon known as the Judge for Drusilla's birthday. Buffy defeated the Judge, but not before the curse which had restored Angel's soul was broken, causing Angel to revert back to his demonic form - the form of Angelus, who had brought the vampire Drusilla into the world. After Angelus began competing for Drusilla's affections, Spike made a deal with Buffy: Spike would help Buffy deal with Angel if she allowed Spike and Dru to leave Sunnydale and never return.

This was done, however, after fleeing to Brazil, Drusilla left Spike. Returning to Sunnydale, Spike captured Buffy's witch friend Willow to perform a love spell for him to win back Drusilla. However, Spike's old vampire lackies learned of his return and wanted him to pay the price for abandoning them.
Helped by Buffy and Angel (back to his good old self) who were eager to get Willow back and be rid of Spike, Spike fought off the other vampires. After this, he realized that he had been all wrong headed about the situation. He decided he needed to be the man he used to be again, the man Dru loved. He announced that he would go find Dru, tie her up, torture her, until she liked him again.

This he did, but he returned to Sunnydale a year later after Drusilla left him again.

He returned to Sunnydale to find the legendary Gem of Amara, which, according to legend, would render any vampire who wore it invincible. With his new girlfriend, Harmony (who had been a vampire for only a few months), he found the gem and went up against Buffy. Buffy took the ring from him, and sent it to Angel to take care of. Spike followed the ring, and captured Angel, only to find that Angel had hidden the ring. Spike hired a vampire to torture Angel.
This vampire eventually got hold of the ring, betraying Spike before being chased and killed by Angel. Angel got hold of the ring and destroyed it.

Spike headed back to Sunnydale, but was captured by a government agency that dealt with the lower beings, known as the Initiative. They implanted Spike with a device that prevented him from causing physical harm to any human, lest he experience intense neurological pain. With nowhere else to turn, Spike went to Buffy. He stayed with Giles, Buffy's Watcher, before moving in with Xander.

In this time, he discovered that he was still able to cause injury to demons. With this new knowledge, he began assisting Buffy and her friends before moving into a tomb in one of Sunnydale's many cemeteries. Spike was approached by a being known as Adam. Adam was an experiment that the Initiative had been working on. To use computer jargon, their plans went tits-up. Adam was made of various pieces of various demons and had turned evil, intent on destroying humans and allowing demons to rule the earth once more. In exchange for Adam removing Spike's chip, Spike was to help him deal with the slayer and her friends. Spike played each of Buffy's friends against each other, resulting in them splitting up, leaving Buffy open to attack. However, Spike and Adam's plans failed, and Adam turned against Spike, who was able to escape.

After Adam was killed by Buffy, Spike helped Buffy and her friends escape the underground Initiative headquarters, which Adam had filled with demons.

Soon afterwards, Harmony ends up with Spike again, as a plan of hers to kill Buffy fails, and she believes she is in danger. Spike and Harmony work together to capture an Initiative doctor to attempt to remove the chip from Spike's head. Believeing the operation to be succesful, Spike attacks Buffy, only to find that the doctor lied to him.

Spike is furious, but not so much at the doctor: he declares that Buffy is trying to send him insane. Everywhere he turns, there she is. Spike has a dream featuring Buffy, but instead of a fight, they kiss, with Spike declaring to Buffy that he loves her. After this, Spike acts differently towards Buffy. When Buffy asks him to tell him of when he killed his Slayers, Spike takes the opportunity to press his new found attachement. He is rebuffed by Buffy, leaving him heartbroken. When he attempts to wreak his revenge, he finds Buffy upset over her mothers worsening condition, and ends up comforting her.
