Mike Barron (R.I.P) and his wife Bridie - Stamford Gaelic Football Club Guest of Honour 1996 and friend to one and all!
Mike Barron has been a prominent figure of the Irish Community in Stamford for many, many years and he will be sadly missed by his family, neighbours, friends and acquaintences.
Mike was born in Co. Wexford in 1937 and moved to Stamford in 1956 where he worked for 21 years with the city's sanitation department and for
10 years with Commerce Packaging.
He purchased Burns - 'the
neighborhood bar' - at 60 Hamilton Ave. in 1986 from its original owner, Ed
Burns. True to form Mike made no changes and so, before we had all the other Irish Bars in Stamford, we had Burns Tavern - where blue collar, white collar or no collar made no difference whatsoever!
Mike and his wife Bridie were partners in all senses of the word. They married in 1959 and have six children - Dennis, Kathleen, Patty, Geraldine, Michele and Chrissy. They were also business partners - Mike sreved the drinks and Bridie did the books.
They reared their children with a very even cultural balance - all can Irish dance, play some music and even make 'boxty' but all are also very proud of being American Citizens and celebrate St. Patricks Day and July 4th with the same enthusiasm.
And so, as we say farewell to Mike and wish for him eternal peace, we are greatful and thankful for the wonderful memories he has left with us all, and are gladened (in some way) that his family carry his dreams and thoughtfulness with them.
For many more dedications and memories of Mike read the Stamford's Own Newsletter where some of his friends wrote down their fondest memories of Mike.
To Bridie, Dennis, Kathleen, Patty, Gerry, Michele and Chrissy we offer our heartfelt condolences.
"Eternal rest grant to him, Lord Jesus and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the soul of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace."
