Gaelic Park Stamford V Leitrim Stamford 3-7 Leitrim 1-9 Leitrim got of to their usual start with a point from Bill Denneghy - after a fowl by Hennessy. This was to be the only score for some minutes until Denneghy broke through the Stamford defence for another point. With some fourteen minutes gone this game seemed to be doomed as a typical opening day game but, with time ticking away an Evan Kelly goal broke the deadlock for Stamford and now the fans were cheering. Stamford took a further lead with a point from P. Creaven. However Leitrim were not going to be held back and with two more points from play Leitrim were now chasing Stamford. Spike Martin halted the Leitrim gallop with a well-taken goal allowing Stamford to take the lead at the break. Leitrim got of to a great start in the second half with a good goal. This saw Stamford struggling with the Leitrim forwards. But some good work by Richie Purcell, Keith Hennessy and Justin O'Halloran saw Stamford keep the edge. With some good points from Creaven, B. Kennedy and P. Joyce Stamford started to take command again. It was a day when Leitrim were not to be outdone and they fought their way back to within a point of Stamford. Bill Denneghy was proving to be the thorn in Stamford's side as with some well-taken free's Leitrim now took control. And so with some eight minutes remaining Stamford trailed by 2 points. Then P. Creaven turned on the magic with a great goal - following some good work by Evan Kelly. Two more points by Creaven saw Stamford run out the winners. Man of the Match: P. Creaven Report By: K. Gaelic Park Stamford V Kerry Stamford 2-12 Kerry 0-9 What a day for Stamford and especially for one of our greatest players through the years - Spike Martin. Sunday's display should leave no doubt that Spike is back and he's better than ever! As the Irish Voice said he "proceeded to rip the Kerry defense to shreds". Stamford were ahead 0-4 to 0-2 at the break, after some good scores from Spike and Keith Hennessy. The second half saw Spike again in action with ample help from Hennessy and Kieran Gallagher, whose two quick points opened the gap to four. Kerry looked like they had some fight left in them until, again Spike came through with two excellently struck points and then with a well-taken goal. Stamford were truly on there way. Moylan and Pauric Creavon pointed to leave Kerry with a mountain to climb, and the last line was delivered by Spike with a goal to give him a personal tally of 2-04 - reminding us why he has been one of New Yorks top scorers over the past decade. The Irish Voice said we "played excellent possession football as a team." You bet we did..... Make no mistake we want the Silver this year!!! Stamford: Enda Lohan, Phillip Wickham, Justin O'Halloran, Jason Williams, Richie Purcell, Keith Hennessy (0-2), Ted Steede, Alan Fanning, Kieran Gallagher (0-3), Pauric Creavon (0-1), Cathal Boyle, Spike Martin (2-4), Tom Moylan (0-1), Bonnie Kennedy (0-1). Gaelic Park Stamford V Rockland Stamford 2-12 Kerry 1-08 Rockland got a dream start to this tie in Galeic Park when Fisher Fitzgerald put the ball in the Stamford net with his first touch, and he pointed for them afterwards - it looked as if an upset was imminent. However, Stamford settled down and with the lion's share of possession as a result of their midfield superiority, they stormed right back. First Cathal Boyle pointed and then after a dazzling passing movement, Boyle finished in the net. Suddenly this game had come to life, and with Kieran Gallagher and Spike Martin getting in on the act they threatened to swamp Rockland. The first half saw some exciting passages of play. Rockland, through Fisher, Golden and Gerry O'Riordan pointed their way back, but Stamford showed the teamwork that has made them so competitive over the years by stringing another fine passing movement together. The final pass of this movement was the crucial one with Spike Martin placing Kieran Gallagher who finished in the net for a super goal that sent them into the break three points ahead. The second half saw Rockland closed down by the Stamford defense. With Philip Wickham, Richie Purcell and Keith Hennessy excelling, the writing was on the wall. Stamford stats Enda Lohan, Justin O'Halloran, Philip Wickham, Robbie McGeany, Keith Hennessy, Richie Purcell, Mark Comerford, Alan Fanning, Sean Maher, Fergal O'Neill, Tom Moynahan, Kieran Gallagher (1-4), Pauric Creavon (0-2), Cathal Boyle (1-2), Spike Martin (0-4). Gaelic Park Stamford V Donegal Donegal 3-12 Stamford 1-06 IN EMPHATIC fashion at Gaelic Park, Donegal stated with malevolent intent that they are as Hungry for the New York Silverware as ever. In a game that sprung to life after two minutes with a dazzling Donegal passing movement that ended with Brendan Devaney blasting to the net, the real fight in Stamford never emerged and really this game was over before it began. Stamford did get on the board in the 15th minute with a Brian Craven point, but it was all Donegal and Enda Lohan's heroics in the unenviable goalkeeping position was what prevented them from adding to their goal tally. A Ted Steede goal did give Stamford reason for optimism before the break to leave the score 2-3 to 1-2. Stamford: Enda Lohan, Robbie Mageegan, Justin O'Halloran, Keith Hennessy, Richie Purcell, Jason Williams, Brian Craven 0-1, Fergal O'Neill, Kieran Gallagher 0-3, Tom Moylan, Alan Fanning 1-0, Spike Martin, Ted Steede, Pauric Craven 0-2. Back to top Gaelic Park Stamford V Tyrone Stamford 1-13 Tyrone 1-08 In a game that Stamford deserved to win, it still took them 45 minutes to wrestle the victory from the grasp of a very weakened Tyrone outfit. Pauric Craven and Colin Parkinson pointed in that order before a fine Richie Purcell point put Stamford ahead. Tyrone woke up briefly, led by their best player Martin Slowey, who repeatedly surged from the back to set up attacks. These attacks led to 2 points a piece by Mark and Michael Sloan to give Tyrone the lead. Before the half Stamford registered through Pauric Crevan (2) and Kieran Gallagher to leave Tyrone with a slender 0-6 to 0-5 lead. This lead, however, was short-lived, as Stamford started to play as a team and utilized their superior strength to take the most direct route to goal. Craven, Gallagher and Eric McDonald pointed to give Stamford a lead that was never overtaken and when Craven, after a delightful passing movement, palmed to the net this game was all but over. Stamford stats: Enda Lohan, Mark Comerford, Robbie Kelleher, Phil Wickham, Keith Hennessy, Richie Purcell (0-1), Justin O'Halloran, Brian Craven (0-1), Pat Coyne, Eric McDonald (0-1), Alan Fanning, Cathal Boyle, Kieran Gallagher (0-2), Dave McDonagh, Pauric Craven (1-8). Man of the Match Pauric Craven Back to top Gaelic Park Stamford V Westmeath Stamford 1-17 Westmeath 2-06 For this Playoff decider Stamford brought in the assistance of Niall Buckley from Kildare and Dave McDonagh from Mayo and Spike Martin was also back to lead the attack. Stamford's pocket rocket from Achill, Kieran Gallagher, hit the mark in the first minute from a free. When Dave McDonagh's superb point split the uprights to put Stamford ahead by four points, they were coasting and in complete control. However, faced with early dismissal Westmeath rallied to play their best football of the hour. A super Sam Yore goal, followed quickly by points from Henry Yore(2) and Pauric Hurley had them ahead at the break 1-5 to 0-5. Stamford assumed complete control of the game upon the resumption, with Pauric Crevan's silken touches a joy to behold, stroking frees over from as far as 57 yards and inspiring them to surge forward and kill off the Westmeath challenge, which they did at will. Spike Martin put the writing on the wall with a well-taken goal and the litany of points followed made this seem like training outing. Full credit to Stamford for the manner in which they achieved this win and in the process took control of the top spot in the Senior A standings. Stamford stats: Enda Lohan, Phillip Wickham, Robbie McGeeghan, Mark Comerford, Justin O'Halloran, Richie Purcell, Keith Hennessy, Niall Buckley, Tom Moylan (0-1), Fergal O'Neill, Alan Fanning, Pauric Crevan (0-7), Spike Martin (1-0), Dave McDonagh (0-1), Kieran Gallagher (0-7). Sub Ted Steede (0-1). Man of the Match Pauric Crevan Back to top Gaelic Park Stamford V Cavan Stamford 1-10 Cavan 0-13 Both sides started in familiar fashion, with Eddie Reilly for Cavan and Pauric Crevan for Stamford swapping points, followed by Jason Reilly and JP Smith, who repeated the dose minutes later. At this stage Cavan enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but overpassing at midfield proved their downfall, slowing the supply up front and severely negating the effectiveness of their inside line. Stamford, taking full advantage, reeled off points from Spike Martin and Justin O'Halloran before Ciaran Gallagher's low shot took two deflections to find the net and put Stamford five ahead. In fact, Cavan was lucky to find themselves only two points adrift at the half, thanks to some fine JP Smith shooting. Cavan started the second half a different team. In fact, the Cavan midfield exerted such a hold on the game that Cavan, with six unanswered points, raced into a four-point lead and looked set for home. However, after being held scoreless for 22 minutes, up popped Stamford's Pauric Crevan with three fast points to put life back in this game. In a hectic finish Fergal O'Neill leveled the game, and Stamford looked to have stolen it when Mayo man Ciaran Gallagher pointed from the wing with 30 seconds left, but in a superb passage of play Joe Cassidy found Liam McBarron at midfield, whose deep ball brought a spectacular catch from Gary McDermott, who was fouled in front of the posts. JP Smith's free saw justice done and a fair result and Cavan lives to fight another day. Back to Top
