Mythological Allusions
This is only a slight overveiw on each of the deities/gods.  For more information please visit- Enclycolpedia Mythica
Mars- Also known as Aries, in mythology was the god of war.  This is also symbolic of Rei, who has the fiery soul of a warrior, and whose personality reflects that of the war-god.

Jupiter- was the name of Zeus.  Erios, his shield, symbolized Zeus himself.  Zeus was not a warrior but a protector.  This is obviously portrait through Makoto, for she seems to be the one obsessed with protecting Usagi.  She first sacrificed herself while fighting Nehelenia, although Usagi was in a dream world. Then, again, after her star seed was taken she asked that the starlights protect usagi and the world.  This illusion to the mighty god is furthured by the fact Jupiter’s attack is “oak evolution” and another symbol for the god is the oak tree.

Mercury- was also known as Hermes, the messenger (and associated with friendship) God.  This is the parallelism is drawn to the fact that Ami always is the one to give the information to them all.  She si the peacemaker and follows happily behind Usagi.

Venus- Also known as Aphrodite, was the deity of love.   This is a clear line drawn, for Minako’s attacks and her obsessions are all like the deity of love.

Uranus- Was the deity of the heavens, and supposable the first ruler of the world.  This was not an Olympian God, but rather a Titian.  Uranus was the guardian of the sky, and one of the most powerful of the Gods.  Haruka shows this personality with her tomboyish ideas, power, and even through words.  Right before she dies she says that they (Neptune included) no longer have the “wings” to fly… much like racing.

Neptune- Also known as Posiden, was the famous God of the Sea.  Neptune was considered to be a God to pray for safe passage on the seas, and also one of the most powerful gods.  Michiru is the counterpart to this powerful Olympian due to her water obsession, power, and protective instincts.

Saturn- Identified with the Greek name “cronos” this deity was associated with agriculture.  Powerful, Cronos one ate his children, for he was afriad of their powers rivaling his own (although they later were born) and gave birth to all the “Olympians”.  I think the line is drawn in that Saturn has the power to take away life, but also has the gift of prophesy, able to create things, like the corn would grow.

Pluto- The only Olympian not to live on Mt. Olympus Pluto was the god of the underworld (kind of like Sesetuna lived alone guarding the gates of time).  Not also that her attack is “dead scream”, representing the link to the god of death.

Luna/Artemis/Diana- Diana and Luna are the names for the same Goddess.  (Yes, Artemis is a girls name)…. The goddess of hunting and the moon, they are depicted with crescent moons on their forehead.  Ok, I think that is obvious enough, all the moon kittys are closely associated with the moon and Usagi.

Endymion(Mamoru)/Selene (Usagi)- Endymond was the shepherd boy in love with the goddess of the moon, Selene.  She was deeply in love with him and asked Zeus that he be allotted eternal life… which was granted.  Every night she came down and visited him.  I think the ocmparisions in this one are obvious as well.  Endymion was human, earthling like Mamoru, represented by a shepherd (or king depending what source).  Selene was represented by Usagi, and wasoften depicted with a moon on her forehead.  Their love affair is obvious in the story.
