SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE FOURTEEN

Medical Breakthroughs: This Ivanhoe Broadcast News site is an excellent resource for articles on recent medical successes and other topics dealing with the treatment of diseases. It's aimed at the lay surfer so you don't have to worry about being confounded by jargon. And if you have your own questions on medical conditions, you can post them at the 'Dr.'s Q&A' section. Here's a sampling of the material available in the latest issue: 'Nerve Pain Relief' (about a new drug that me offer relief for sufferers of nerve pain), 'Crib Stops Thumb Suckers' (about a device designed to break the harmful habit), 'Predicting Outcome for Breast Cancer Patients', 'Study Says Fluoridated Water is Safe'. Some of the pieces are also accompanied by video (RealPlayer), giving you a clearer picture of the subject discussed. Not all the topics dealt with on this American site will be relevant to local visitors but some of the ideas, like the Medical Discount Card, will have you wondering why no-one has thought about it here yet.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame: A site that "celebrates the creative and entrepreneurial spirit of great inventors" whose contributions are discussed in neat entries under their names. The alphabetical index includes names like George Babcock, Alexander Graham Bell, George Eastman, Thomas Alva Edison, Henry Ford, Charles Goodyear and many other American inventors. Again, because it's an American site -- The National Inventors Hall of Fame was established in 1973 by the National Council of Patent Law Associations, and an annual induction ceremony is held in Akron, Ohio to honor new US inventors -- it won't satisfy those looking for summations of the work of the world's greatest inventors in one place. But it's still a stimulating site. Besides the inventors index, there's also an index of inventions.

Olympics Through Time: Want to know how the Olympic Games came about? Then this site, put together by The Foundation of the Hellenic World, is where you should head first. It discusses the Olympics from ancient times, spinning an intriguing tale that's as full of myths and magic as those monster-infested stories of yore. The world's greatest sports event is treated under four sections -- 'Prehistory', 'Antiquity', 'Revival' and 'Comments' -- in an authoritative manner. The tone is scholarly at times but the story is so good you just keep reading and clicking on sub-sections like 'Egypt & Mesopotamia', 'Minoan Crete', 'Mycenean Greece Homeric Age', 'Athletism & Polis' and 'Why Olympia?' to get more.

An Online Library of Literature: This site offers full texts of English, American and world literary and popular classics at no cost. Amazingly, you don't have to take long toilet breaks for downloads. Just choose from the alphabetical list of authors -- Aesop, James Matthew Barrie, L. Frank Baum, Anne Bronte... Edgar Rice Burroughs, Lewis Carroll... Stephen Crane, Charles Darwin... Arthur Conan Doyle, Alexandre Dumas... John Milton... Jules Verne, Voltaire, Herbert George Wells -- and then click on the titles of the works you wish to save to disk or print. After that, it's just a matter of accessing the texts chapter by chapter, and the process often takes just minutes. There are no graphics to slow down access time and everything is laid out in a foolproof fashion.

Rainforest Action Network: This San Francisco-based organisation offers some good arguments for preserving the world's rainforests and inspiring ideas on how we can prevent environmental pillage. It's loaded with practical information and features that provide suggestions on how you can become actively involved and gives you all the facts you need to know about rainforests in general. Of course, no guerrilla tactics are discussed here but if you reckon yourself an eco-warrior, even if it's only on weekends when you're exploring the jungle on your mountain bike (sorry, four-wheelers are more eco-terrorists than eco-warriors), you would find plenty of tips on how to heighten your consciousness on the subject and spread the word about the importance of green preservation. Children will also find much to learn here, which makes it ideal for a classroom Website project.

The Ultimate Collection of News Links: If you're a news junkie with an insatiable craving for any kind of report from any part of the world, this is where you should hang out. Almost all the major news sources with a Web presence are listed here. And to help you along, there's an alphabetical country index which makes specific searches a cinch. Under Malaysia, you get "Borneo Mail Kota Kinabalu, Daily Express Kota Kinabalu, Harakah Kuala Lumpur, NanYang Siang Pau Malaysia, New Straits Times Kuala Lumpur, News Malaysia, The Sarawak Tribune, The Star, The Sun Petaling Jaya". That should give you an idea of how comprehensive the news link listings are. The page downloads pretty fast so it's not going to be a navigational nightmare like most links-loaded Web portals.
