SUNDAY STYLE INSITE RECOMMENDATIONS, PAGE 28

Buda Caving Expedition: Join the members of the Gunung Buda Project, an expedition that went "searching for unknown caves to explore and map in the Malaysian State of Sarawak" in January this year. The site may have an educational feel -- it specifically addresses school children -- but the content can also be enjoyed by grown-ups interested in exploring the planet. There are lots of great pictures in the Photo Gallery and Yucky Pictures, and the sound files in Jungle and Cave Sounds are intriguing. The Cave Art and Borneo and Rainforests links, which offer plenty of useful information, are worth checking out as well. The page loads swiftly and the simple design makes navigation a cinch.

Earthpulse: Want to play scientist and find out what causes natural disasters? Then this is the place you should head for. Though you have to go through such time- and memory-consuming tasks as registering as a member and installing something called a "SimPlayer Plugin", your effort is well repaid with admission to labs that allow you to conduct some really nifty experiments. Not only that, you get to see how hurricanes and earthquakes wreak havoc via simulators. Anyway, once you've signed up, you can keep going back as often as you like without signing in again to enjoy the great features at this site. Downloads take a couple of minutes, especially for the plugins, but they're worth the wait.

Figure This! Math Challenges for Families: "Is a discount of 30 per cent off the original price, followed by a discount of 50 per cent off the sale price, the same as a discount of 80 per cent from the original price?" If that's the kind of question that keeps you on your toes, you owe it to yourself to check out this numbers Web page. There are loads of interesting if somewhat trivial challenges -- ("Why are manhole covers round?", "Which cookie has the most chocolate?"...) -- that you and your family can take part and have fun with. And there are clues to help you come up with the answers. The site's easy to access and you can move from page to page pretty fast.

Philip Glass: Philip Glass is among the finest and most original of contemporary composers, and this page presents all the relevant information on the US master in an admirably straightforward manner. Which is main reason the site is highlighted here. It's a model of a well-designed artist site with all the features -- Music Catalog, Introduction, Biography, Discography, etc -- presented in a neat and simple fashion. Except for the moving album cover images, there are no fancy graphics to slow downloading. If you are thinking of setting up a site for your favorite artist, actor or whatever, this is the way to go.

World Arts West: People Like Me Activities: Teacheers and students who want to know more about performing arts and cultural appreciation will find plenty to lead them on at this informative site. 'Movement and Music' deals with appreciating "the diversity of dance, music, costumes and cultural styles", while 'Art and Construction' offers "ideas to inspire... creations..." There is also a guide to conduct discussions -- 'Thinking and Talking' -- on "dance, cultural choreography, and family histories". Other resources available here include a Dance Style Locator and Activity Pages. The main page is an easy load; there are no distracting graphics to confuse you.

World No Tobacco Day: IN case you don't know, May 31 is World No Tobacco Day, and this site, which promotes a tobacco-free world, is a non-smoker's dream and a smoker's nightmare. But then, many non-smokers these days used to be smokers once, so as enlightened (as opposed to "enlighted") ones, we have a duty to educate our smoking friends about the negative aspects of the habit. And this page has just the stuff to get us started. There's a useful Resource Library where you can find all kinds of information about tobacco, and the 'I Quit Tobacco-Use' section is an interesting feature. The site is flash-enabled, which means you need one of the newer versions of Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Explorer to gain glitch-free access, but thankfully you don't have to take a smoking break for downloads.
