Chaos Gallery: If surreal
and psychedelic images and pictures of the world as a
place without order turn you on, you should call up
this site.
There's not much textual content, but there's a
striking eloquence to the images featured.
Arranged under five hyperlink categories --
'Attractor Pictures', 'Basin Pictures', 'Chaos
Animations', 'Fractal Photographs' and 'No Clue!' --
the sights are about what you imagination leads you to
believe.
There're some descriptions by the image creator, but
individual interpretation is the key to making the
concept work.
The full pictures take a while to load, but there're
thumbnail images to let you choose what you want to
view.
drkoop.com: A highly
useful and user-friendly health site that guides you
through self-diagnosis and offers clear, concise
information on a variety of "Conditions and Concerns".
The man behind it is one Dr C. Everett Koop, a
veteran whose love of sharing knowledge and wisdom is
reflected in the rich diversity of the site.
Besides special features like the 'Drug Checker',
which offers guidance on drug-food interactions, there
are chat sessions on topics ranging from 'Depression
Management' to 'Skin Care'.
Among the interesting current features (May 9) are
discussions on the effects of music on children, the
symptoms of constipation and changes during
'perimenopause'.
There're plenty of links to other resources, and
while the main page doesn't exactly load up within
half a minute, the site will be an instant help to
those looking for answers to basic medical questions.
Field & Stream/Outdoor Life Online: If you're into fishing,
hunting and other outdoor pursuits, this is one of the
first sites you should visit for tips and ideas.
The main page is neat and attractive, making
navigation a joy. But the categorization is also
highly effective, letting you click immediately on
links to the topics that interest you.
Among the intriguing offerings are 'Harrowing True
Stories' under 'This Happened to Me', 'An Easy
Fish-Cleaning Technique' under 'Fishing', 'Avoiding
Problem Hunting Partners' under 'Tactics' and 'The
Handgun Power Race' under 'Guns, Bows and Ammo'.
There're also humor, forum and chat sections and
dozens of links to other sites.
Junkscience.com: So
all this talk about environmental decay, health
hazards and other problems that could make life
hellish has you worried, huh?
Well, here's a site which will temper your
existential dread with a bit of humour.
Steven Milloy, who knows his science as well as he
does his junk, takes you through some very interesting
topics, like how 'Tobacco May Benefit Ozone'
(really?), 'Genetically Engineered Foods: Science and
Nature Don't Necessarily Mix' and 'Our Swollen
Future'.
On a more serious note, the home page offers the
latest news on environmental and health matters from
various authoritative sources.
There're lots of links to related pages, including
'Global Warming', 'Ionizing Radiation' and 'Encocrine
Disrupters'.
There's also a 'Media Contacts' section that puts
environmental, medical and science reporters within
your reach.
The Archives section goes right back to 'Apr-Dec
1996', so you can practically be here for hours.
Loading could be faster, but even if you have to
wait almost a minute, the features are worth it.
MarsNews.com: Okay, so
we've gone a bit in favour of space and science sites
this week. But this 'NewsWire for the New Frontier'
just cannot be ignored, especially since the Red
Planet looks like the best bet for human colonization
in the distant future.
Besides regular updates about Mars, there are
interesting sections on such things as Mars missions
and 'Life on Mars?'
There's also an enlightening report on the failure
of the Mars Polar Lander, which should interest
serious space exploration buffs.
And the feature on 'Hollywood's Focus on Mars' has
plenty to hold most surfers' attention.
Other attractions include 'The Martian Chronicles',
put together by the Mars Youth Group, and a 'Mars
Society' section that anyone can join and interact.
SpaceViews: If it has
anything to do with space -- launch, research,
technological breakthrough etc -- chances are that the
event will be covered at this site.
And it's so up to date that there are new news items
and features almost every day.
The features range from the fascinating ('Searching
for Life on Mars') to the provocative ('Glenn
Criticizes Russia for Space Station Delays'), and all
the major stories are neatly archived.
The special features on 'Mars Exploration', 'The
Moon: Past, Present, Future', 'John Glenn's Return to
Space' and 'Space in the Movies' also make for a great
read.
The links include 'Sites of the Week' and 'Media
Kit', and if you have a space article to submit, just
click on 'Article Submissions'.
