Part 1: Caitlin in Thailand

No sooner had she left than the first report came in from Bangkok, dated Wednesday 15th September:

Bangkok is hot and sweaty so we're leaving tomorrow asap, we've done the touristy things and spent a lot of the time at night in the bars on Khao San road which is the main backpackers road and also where our hostel is. Tonight though we're going to find the Thia boxing stadium which will be fun.

A second account from Thailand came in on Sept 17th...

Hello again,
Well leaving BK was the best thing because we ended up in Kanchanaburi which is on the river Kwai. It is absolutely beautiful up here, people are really friendly and you feel alot safer and less hastled than you do in BK. We're staying in a guest house right next to the river, they even have floating rooms but they were filled when we arrived. We walked up to the bridge over the river Kwai yesterday and tomorrow we're going to check out Hells Fire Pass where more POW's died when building the railway than anywhere else along it, we'll also go to the war museum and the cemetry.
On a more lighter note today we went elephant trecking through the jungly and bamboo rafting on the river as well as enjoying both it was amazing to see how people live out in rural Thailand they have one room huts on sticks and cook on what looked like mud stoves, when you go past all the children run out and shout Bye-bye or Hello.
As part of the trip that we were on we also visited a famous 7 step waterfall which I've forgotten the name of, it was absolutely beautiful and at the 2nd and 3rd step we were able to swim at the bottom of the falls, it was crystal clear and there were hundreds of fish which actually nipped at you if you stayed still for long enough.
We finished the day with a 2 hour journey on the famous death railway. The scenery was stunning but it seems strange that something with such a horrific story to it could be used in such an everyday kind of way like taking herds of children to and from school. Anyway to round up this western part of Thailand is amazing I only wish I could stay for a lot longer to do all the things I want, well worth a trip back.

A third and final message from Thailand from September 26th, '99

Hello everyone,
I'm now on an Island down South on the east side of Thailand. For those that want to look it up it's called Koh Tao and it's the smallest and most Southern of three. It's absolute paradise, Palm trees clear blue sea with living coral and fish more or less right up to the beaches. For the first day or so I lazed around, met up and hung around with 3 Canadian girls while Rich went and did his Open water dive course. On Friday night there was a full moon party on another Island, Koh Phangan. We got a boat over there with the people on Rich's diving course and the people I'd met, the journey was 4hrs!!!!! But the party was something else with about 5000 people all on the beach. I slept on the beach and then got the boat back at 9am. Needless to say I was v. tired yesterday. Today I started my dive course and I love it. So it looks like I'm going to be diving my way around the world, particularly as every country we're going to has been recomended as great places to dive.
