One of my creative sources is a song called "Sell Out" by
Reel Big Fish, from their album Turn The Radio Off. The
lyrics are -
Well, I know you can't work in fast
Food all your life
But don't sign that paper tonight, she said,
But it's too late.
I don't remember what I read, I don't remember
What they said, I guess it doesn't matter,
I guess it doesn't matter
Anymore - you're gonna go to the record store
You're gonna give 'em all your money
Radio plays what they want you to hear
They tell me it's cool but I just don't believe it...
Sell out, with me oh yea, sell out, with me tonight
Record company's gonna give me lots of money and
Everything's gonna be. (all right)
No more flippin' burgers puttin' on my silly hat you know
I don't want that no more, I didn't ask when we'd
Get paid, I quit my day job anyway, I guess it
Doesn't matter, I guess it doesn't matter anymore
You're gonna go to the record store, you're gonna
Give 'em all your money, radio plays what they want
You to hear, they tell me it's cool, but I just don't
Believe it
Sell out, with me oh yea, sell out
With me tonight, the record company's gonna give me
Lots of money and everything's gonna be.
I don't think it'll be so bad
I know it won't be so bad
Cause the man said "That's the way it is" and the
Man said "It don't get better than this" no no no
So I signed on to the record company, they say they're
Gonna give me lot's of money, if I play what
They want you to hear
They tell me it's cool, and I sure believe it...

I remember hearing an interview with the band on the
radio a long time ago, and the band said that this song is
about a group of kids who think that all of these bands are
sellouts just because they’re successful.

Blues Brothers 2000

My other creative source is the movie Blues Brothers 2000.
This movie is related to my I-Search topic because the movie
is about Elwood Blues getting the band, the Blues Brothers,
back together, playing gigs, and trying to win a music
contest at Queen Mousette’s. In the movie, they did things
that a lot of bands have to do like dealing agents, and
adjusting to situations at concerts like when their agent
booked them as a bluegrass band. Below are the plot points,
topic, and theme.

The exposition is Elwood had just gotten out of prison
and visits Mother Mary Stigmana who convinces him to mentor
an orphan named Buster. The main characters are Elwood
Blues, Buster, Mighty Mack McTeer, and Cabel Chamberlain.
Elwood had just gotten out of prison. Buster is an orphan.
Mack McTeer is a bartender. Cab is a police chief. The
time is 1998 and the place is Illinois.

The complication is when the Russians visited the club
that Mack worked in and asked for money.

There are several conflicts. One of them is between
Elwood and Cab, which eventually turns out to be between
Elwood and the whole police force. The second conflict is
between Elwood and Mother Mary Stigmana. She believes that
he kidnapped Buster, and is in a way also after him. The
final conflict is between Elwood and the Russians. He got
two of them drunk, took their clothes, tied them up, and
dumped them in an alley.

The climax for the problem between Elwood and Cab/the
police turns around when a priest makes Cab see and feel the
power of Jesus and join the band. The climax for the
problem between Elwood and the Russians is when they find
them at Queen Mousette’s and was going to shoot them.
Finally, the problem between Elwood and Mother Mary Stagmana
finds them at Queen Mousette’s.

The denouement for the problem between Elwood and the
police now thinks that Elwood had kidnapped Cab and follows
them to Queen Mousette’s. The denouement for the problem
between Elwood and the Russians is that Queen Mousette tells
them to stop and go away. For the conflict between Elwood
and Mother Mary Stagmana, Elwood and Buster runs backstage
and Buster tells Elwood that he doesn’t want to go back.

The resolution of the Elwood/police conflict is when
Cab tells them that he’s okay and that he’s decided to join
the band. The Elwood/Russian conflict resolves when Queen
Mousette turns them into mice. And finally, the conflict
between Elwood and Mother Mary Stigmana doesn’t resolve.
Elwood and Buster gets in the car and drive away, again
sending the police chasing after them, perhaps the beginning
to another edition to the Blues Brother series?

I think the topic of this movie is music, and the theme
is that it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, as long
as you go out there and have fun.
