The three things that the industry values the most are
"songs, an artist’s personal service, and an artist’s
identity"(Recording 4). Songs, both recorded and parts of
publishing contracts are protected by copyrights. The
artist’s name is protected by trademark, and an artist’s
personal service, which includes recording contracts and
live appearances, are mostly protected by the contract, "but
also by various statutes and principles of common law"(4).
