This album was conceived to be part of a box-set along with all the original British albums. It features many songs that weren't much popular in the UK. They are B-sides of singles, songs from the Long Tall Sally EP, Bad Boy (issued first in the US and later on A Collection of Beatles' Oldies) and the "Wildlife" version of Across The Universe.
An analysis of the track list shows that the selection criteria
were simple: all songs that doesn't appear neither
on the original albums, nor on the
Red and the
Blue albums.
It seems that the compilers intended to make the box-set a complete
Beatles collection, but they failed not including the A-sides (that
are on the "Red" and "Blue" compilations and also on other albums).
The "completing" compilation was only issued in 1988:
Past Masters.
Additionally, it features on the back cover a long sleeve note text, credited to Hugh Thelder.
Unlike the other compilations, most songs of this
album are in mono (only the German songs, Bad Boy and
Across the Universe are in stereo).
The songs from the EP Long Tall Sally had already appeared in
stereo on Rock and Roll Music, here they are in mono.
This was the first British (and Brazilian) release of the German songs
in stereo. (Sie Liebt Dich appears also on the American edition).
This album, like the American "Rarities", was sold for a relatively short time and became a rarity itself.
