With eye-popping effects!

So, can a guy hunched over a cassette recorder in the kitchen -- armed with an acoustic guitar, a Casio keyboard, and little else -- record any songs worth listening to? I certainly think so, but listen to the songs below and judge for yourself. Afterwards, I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me know what you think of them. If you like them well enough, you may be glad to know that they (and many, many more of my home recordings from the past seven years) are available on CD. Contact me for details.

The songs are available for download below in both MPEG Audio Layer-3 format (often abbreviated as MPEG3 or MP3) and RealAudio 3 format. The MP3 files offer amazing, CD-quality stereo sound (see below), while the RealAudio versions are in mono at a much lower resolution (a bit like listening to a transistor radio...underwater).

If you have a high speed (i.e., Pentium or better) computer, but don't yet have an MP3 player, you really should get one. You can download a zipped version of a good MP3 player here, or there are other shareware players available on the Web. Netscape users will have to make sure that the player is properly plugged in as a "helper" (see "General Preferences" under the "Options" menu column). Needless to say, I didn't write any of these programs, and am not responsible for any damage that they may cause to your system (but so far, they've been kind to mine).

You can also download a free RealAudio Player from the folks at RealAudio.

Many, many thanks to my buddy David Sebba at for his technical expertise.

"Can't you write a happy song?" one of my loyal listeners asked after a spate of my broken-heart ballads. This ditty, inspired by her query and her demeanor, was my attempt.

Chance meetings, unspoken fascinations, and a shuffle rhythym are the raw material for this summer-day song (see Reviews). I've always liked the vibraphone accents, and the bit in the middle where the drums kick in.

Composed in a dorm basement late one solitary night in 1986. This atmospheric 1991 remake features Bert Vaux on electric axe, and was first released as a Redundant Steaks song.

In this self-conscious attempt to evoke a Help-era Beatles' sound (i.e., circa 1965), I confined each of the instruments to a single stereo channel and threw in some "You Won't See Me"- style "ooh la la la"s. The lyrics were a straightforward message to my then-distant fiancee

Impressions from a summer spent as a truck driver in southern Arizona. Although I re-recorded it six months later with fancier equipment and a proper drum machine, this Casio-driven original captured a nicer feel, notwithstanding its technical naievete.

Composed and recorded over the course of a couple hours while my wife (the subject of the song) was out shopping. It's just me and my 12-string, double-tracked. For such a hurried effort, I thought it was quite nice, especially some of the impromptu vocal harmonies.
