Hi List,
I just got a mail from Katie, which included the following line...
> P.S. I think it should be a requirement of the list that everyone have a great sense of humor. Whaddaya think?
Which I think goes without saying. Not meaning to be too rude about it, but the CH list isn't too inspiring a lot of the time. So I'm all for keeping the nature of this list fairly light hearted, and thinking about that inspired me to share a thought with you all.
We all know Dave has a way with words, but you might not realise some of his songs are prophetic, for example...
Rain on Fire (1994)
"...from some foreign sky some unstable system
light years of travel shallow beneath the dirt
atoms bashing pure and ancient
they will mine it yet - we will mine it yet
it's a monument
rain on fire
rain down sideways and the wind's carving ice
a team of scientists dressed for the freezing cold
find evidence of life
rain on fire
just like blood"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but does this not foreshadow the recent NASA claim that evidence of life has been found by a team of scientists in a meteorite recovered from Antarctica?
Now if only the same would happen Re: Don't Hold Your Breath! Any other similar crystal-ball moments in Dave's lyrics???
"Sever My Tongue now and Tie me to a Cactus!"

Hi Jon-Paul,
While I whole-heartedly support the Nostradobbyn activity, I am afraid that I must take exception with crediting him with predicting life on Mars--I'm sure you know that that honor belongs to one David Bowie ;-). (you can bet we'll all be requesting that one at his show next week!)
Take care, Colleen
From: Jon-Paul
Well, I have to reply to that!
The lyrics "Mickey Mouse has Grown up a Cow" and "Is there life on Mars?" hardly suggest signs of life being found in a meteorite recovered from Antarctica by a team of scientists.
*I* reckon Bowie's song was about Drugs...And Sex... And Rock and Roll!
Like all his other songs...Except Space Oddity, which is obviously about being a spaceman, and has NO drug references in at all. Just like Elton John's Rocket Man.
Anyway Colleen, have fun at the concert, and remember to yell out "Play your old stuff", at every opportune moment. I know- enough already,
JP

Okay, I'm a little bored.
I'm waiting for some new DD tunes to arrive in my mailbox so I can contribute something relevant to this list. You already know how I feel about Twist, Collection, and Live, so there's nothing new to add there exept to say that that "Betrayal" is really haunting me these days. "WDYRW?" and "Naked Flame" are floating around upstairs, too.
So, I'm sitting here thinking, "Well, Laura, what one single Dave Dobbyn thought have you had recently that you haven't seen addressed on this list?"
Prepare yourselves, folks, because it's an actual stunner -- bound to create all sorts of turmoil on this list. At the very least, our very own descent into hair and pants territory.
Thanks to JP, I've had a scanned photo of DD for some time -- you know, the one of him with the goatee, kinda looking down at something on the floor? It has a Springsteen sort of ambiance to it, but mostly it reminds me of one of my college housemates, James C. Lewis, or Clewis as the US Mail so fondly addressed him. So, naturally, I had attributed a number of Jimbo's characteristics and traits to DD: about 6'2" tall and medium bright red hair.
Imagine my surprise then, if you will, when I opened my new CH newlsetter and saw the picture of the ENZSO "Noel" awards recipients and saw that the esteemed DD is even shorter than Neil!
Is this reality? How can this be? He sounds so much taller than the 5'6" (a stretch, perhaps?) that he appears to be in this photo! Not that I think any less of his talent, mind you, but, well, it was a bit of a shock, that's all.
So much for my burning, topical, observations.
As to some recent fodder from others . . . Colleen, I too love loud, thrashy rock and roll music, so there numbers another one amongst us who proves that "CH fans don't like loud rock music" axiom wrong (Kill Eye and Command are two of my favorites, and I've scored them accordingly). BTW, what is "FWIW"? And, Chris, I have a whole new appreciation for the 70's regalia that I've come to associate with you -- big hair, flares -- now that I have a sense of your teenage years ;-)
Speaking of which, JP, can we get any early years photos of DD scanned and posted? Now that we've all been able to read so much, I'd kind of like to have a visual history to go along with it. I for one want to see the change from album cover to album cover. How about a timeline?
Yes, yes, I've certainly overstepped the unspoken bounds and brought the fine tenor of this list down a notch or two. Forgive me. It's been a long week, and the weekend is half accounted for already before it's even begun, so I've been indulging myself. I probably shouldn't have downed the rest of that bottle of cheap, French table wine (a red one, JP) after I put the kids to bed. I'll try to behave myself in future.
Willing to bait the administrator,
Laura

Laura, Laura, Laura... it is quite possible that you were the only person in the western world to have assumed Dave is 6 foot 2!- still I guess it's not your fault... but in at least two of the articles I've sent, mention has been made of his similarity to Mickey Rooney!

First of all Laura, I dare you to post that to the CH list ;-). Second of all, that reminds of something my mother once said....but then again, it's not really germane to this discussion. Third of all, the question is, is Dave short or tall for a New Zealander? ;-)

I thought that comparision was because they are both so round and cuddley.

Just a quick reference to the Southern Skies article last week and in articular DD's statement, >"I'm sick to death of riot jokes," he sighed to ChaCha magazine six months later.
Riot jokes? what riot jokes? Myself being somewhat sheltered and naive at the time, (what do you mean I still am JP? :-}) I was not aware (or that I can recall) of any riot jokes circulating regarding DD's involvement at the time. Regardless of DD's statement to the contrary, I think I would like to hear one or two of these witty anecdotes as I feel robbed of a vital piece of the jigsaw that is my life here in Auckland.
So JP, if you or anyone else can recall any of these so-called 'riot jokes' then I shall be greatly appreciative, (and if you can't then just make one up, I'm sure I'll be none the wiser!) yours, DD riot joke deficiently, CJ.

Oooooooh! Chris - how's this! I just thought of a Riot Joke!
Q: How was Dave's concert last night?
A: It was a riot!
(Yeah- lame I know- but that's probably what Dave was referring to in Cha Cha magazine). So I guess I win the prize I mentioned in an earler post...

So- the prize was $250 cash- and now that I've won it- if each of you could please send me
$NZ10 in unmarked bills that would be much appreciated.

In an attempt to redeem myself, I submit the following:
Q. How how was Dave's concert last night?
A. He brought the house down.

These Dobbyn riot jokes are now coming thick and fast!
Q: Who was playing at the time of the Queen St. riot?
A: DD Smash and Grab

Howdy campers,
Firstly a big Merrry Xmas to everyone out there and to the Northern Hemisphites I hope its a bloody cold one! Having suffered through a wet and windy winter its now time for us southerners to kick back by the pool with our chilli bins (or is that 'eski' for you Aussies out there) mellowing to some DD and making the most of the fact that the hole in the ozone is directly above us.
In fact following on from Katies suggestion a wee while back on THAT song in which she reffered to the DD cocktail (Vodka and a pen?) I think I shall spend this summer mixing and matching particular DD songs with drinks, what do you think JP? Vodka and tonic with Whaling (pen optional), six-pack of beer and Bliss, (or a bottle of JD's no ice for the hard types).....get back to you guys on that one.
CJ
