Collective Soul has been my favourite band for years. If you're looking for a page complete with information and lots of other stuff, check out Collective Soul Link, my Collective Soul page.
So what is it about the music of these five guys from Stockbridge, Georgia? A combination of things, really. Their amazing live shows- the best band I've ever seen in concert. Ross's guitar solos that are just pure genius. Ed's ability to combine thought-provoking lyrics and powerful melodies. The fact that they're nice guys without the swollen heads that are so common in rock and roll. In the case of CS, though, the sum is really more than all the parts.
I've seen CS four and a half times in concert. The half was when I was lucky enough to be in the studio of CHOM, a local radio station, with Ed and Ross, listening in on an interview and a few acoustic songs. The other times were at Edgefest 97, the Silent Parade Tour in 97, the Dosage Tour in 99, opening for the Cranberries in 99, and most recently, on the Blender Tour in an incredible show in November 2000!
Some people might call me an obsessed fan. That's okay, I don't mind. We all know that true fan-dom is misunderstood by many :)
If you don't own all seven Collective Soul CDs, what are you waiting for? And if you have the opportunity to see them in concert, don't miss it. They put on a high-energy show that just blows every other band out of the water.
My favourite song by Collective Soul is Forgiveness, off their third release, Disciplined Breakdown. Favourite is a relative term, though; I love all their music.
The sad news of Ross Childress's departure from the band was announced in September of 2001. While I know things will never be the same again, and Ross will be sorely missed, I still look forward to see what the remaining band members will come up with next. One way or the other, I'd like to thank Collective Soul for an era of 8 years of great music!
If Collective Soul Link isn't enough CS-info for you, check out the Collective Soul Webring or Collective Linkage for more sites. Or, see their official page at collectivesoul.com. If you're interested in what CS stuff I own, click here. And to read some of my thoughts on the band, click here.
