BIO
In Spring of 1996, Neil Fader and I began jamming in his basement. We played cover songs by bands we both mutually enjoyed like Bad Religion. We started coming up with our own material and decided we needed a drummer. Naturally, since we knew no one who drummed, we selected a friend we skated with, Chris Abram, and Neil began teaching him how to play.
It wasn't long before Chris learned how to play acceptably well enough, and one day while practicing, these kids asked us to play a show in their backyard since they were having an "end-of-the-year" party after finishing Grade 7. This show was crazy, and after tension developed within the band. Chris decided he didn't want to do it anymore, so me and Neil thought Kato might be done.
By Fall of 1996, we had recruited Garrett Maxfield who we also needed to teach drums to. It wasn't long before he had learned well enough to play as well. We agreed to play a show in February of 1997, but then backed out fearing that we wouldn't be good enough. We practiced a lot and worked on about 5 or 6 originals all the time.
The first "real" show we played was the first School Relief Show at the end of June 1997. We played our four songs and that was that. We had tons of fun since some of our friends were actually dancing for us. After this, we tried to play as many shows that were happening at Oddballs as possible. Unfortunately, we jumped on the ball late and Oddballs closed by the Fall.
At the end of August 1997, we began discussing the prospect of a second guitarist. Brian Percival was interested in playing with us and this was quite exciting since at least me and Garrett had got into punk watching and hearing about bands like Lunchbox and the Degenerates. We decided to give it a go and spent a month or so practicing to integrate Brian into our old songs, as well as integrate his own songs into our set. With the addition of Brian, we had the dual-guitars, as well as two vocalists and felt ready to properly rock. It enabled either me or Brian to sing while the other played guitar as well.
We played our first show with Brian in November 1997 at The Club Underground. We played a set of including Brian's new originals, as well as attempted to cover "We're Not Gonna Take it" by Twisted Sister. The next show we played, we were caught by police drinking in an alley way. Me and Burke had to share the fine between us, although it was put in his name. We passed a hat around at the show and covered the cost of the fine completely. This was the last show with Brian for a bit. He had to move to Windsor for school and we were back as a three-piece again.
It wasn't until April 1998 that we played another show. We were finally accustomed to playing without Brian again, but a week before the show a tragic skateboarding accident caused a broken arm for Garrett. Adam Bettridge, of Out of Step, saved the day by learning all our songs and playing the show with us.
We didn't play again until the School Relief Show at the end of June 1998. We played hard even though we didn't have Brian.
In July or early August 1998, Brian returned to the band. We played another show at the Canatara Bandshell put on by "Buff Brothers". It was during this set that we presented our friend Neil Cannon with an award for being awesome. It was purchased at value village and I think it probably was for bowling or curling. That fall, we were honored to play a couple of Slamfests in the fall after the return of Pud. After the December Slamfest, we didn't play again until March at this "Indiefest," at the Industry.
However, through this time we were very busy preparing and recording our Profound & Wonderful and True Cd-r at Soundscape Studios. We were also busy preparing a new song to be performed at Indiefest that was written about the organizer of the event, Roots of Rock, aptly titled, Ripping Off Rebellion.
When we played Indiefest, we paid the organizer with a bag full of pennies, and took great enjoyment from performing our song attacking our own exploitation at the hands of the company. This show was pretty fun. There was a large crowd and during our set, I was able to stage dive and crowd-surf.
Around this time, we recorded two songs for a compilation being produced by Soundscape Studios called Riots in the Valley. We did one called Sarnia Sucks, and our song that we prepared for the Indiefest show, Ripping Off Rebellion.
In May, we played a terrible show. It was at this place called Rhythms where there was a minimum age requirement and no dancing allowed. The icing on the cake was being promised that we'd be paid and then Pud didn't come through on it. It was the worst show I've ever played and had I known dancing wasn't allowed, I would have declined. I also didn't appreciate being ripped off by people I thought were friends.
Kato played a show at Gravity, but this did not feature Neil or myself. Ryan Jameson filled in on bass. Neil and I were in Detroit, MI, seeing Leatherface.
Our last show with Brian was also the last School Relief Show. This was the release show for the Riots in the Valley compilation. By this show, there were personal problems between us and without really saying much Brian was pretty much done. We played one final show without him at Gravity Tattoos and that was the last show.
Kato was musically simplistic hardcore punk rock. Lyrics covered punk rock and political subject matter.
After Kato, Brian played with Das Studs. I joined Out of Step on rhythm guitar. Neil, Garrett and I formed Napalmarrea 6 months (or so) later. Later, I joined Death by Defecation, and even later (more recently) formed a band called Ass 'O' Gore.
