11)Michael K. Bowlin | If I Should Explode-is my favorite because of its chordprogressions, the incredible intensity that charges even the subtlest of moments in the song, and thelyrics.I'm also a big fan of "Rite of Shiva"- it has such a decadentglory to it...such a rare thing in rock anymore, industrial or otherwise. | 1/06/98 |
12)Kris Smonsen | Either butterfly wings because of the lyrics, or Suicide king because of the awesome beat. | 1/07/98 |
13)Mark Nosowicz | Casual Users- Reason: Not only is this song amazingly well written musically, but the meaning that I get from it has really changed me. One ofthe obvious themes of Gilt is anti-drug use, or at least a personal message ofhow useless it has been for the band. I can infinitely respect the way it isportrayed in this particular song. It created a mood for me where I saw thetruth behind what I was doing, and where it was taking me. All that and still areally amazing song. | 1/08/98 |
14)Alana Beck | Twofold Godhead

19)Ryan Rogness | N/A | 1/19/98 |
20)Fanuilh | Butterfly Wings-I like it because I was tormented by having asmall part of it running through my head for eight weeks, not knowing theartist, and knowing no one else who knew, either. I finally found out yesterdaywhile listening to an ad for a concert that was on a tape I had recorded 'bout two years ago. I started screaming. | 1/20/98 |
21)Ted Logan | Last Because it has a sort of funky guitar and bass going for it. I also like his quote at the beginning of the song. | 1/31/98 |

My favorite song would probably have to be Suicide King, with
Serpico and Trigger for Happiness close behind. I like that song because of its
overall tone. With the slow parts, it reminds me of sitting in my room
contemplating suicide while being surrounded in empty nothingness that echoes.
Then the emptiness caves in and I pick up a razor. (Bend like a reed in the
wind). chaotic thoughts consume and I usually cut some stuff into me. Then I
feel better and stop. Yeah, the song just rules.

If I Should Explode, because first of all, the opening guitar
intro, then the fact that they don't wear it out. Then the verse has a smooth
groove.

Gilt LP on a final hopeless, endless loop.
On the surface:
Written about a friend's suicide. Samples from the speech that
inspired the
world's biggest mass suicide. Lyrics about an old man "sick of
it all" - his
death happened years ago, and the physical death (solitary: "the
insides
spilled out into the cold mountain air") was the only way he
could get across
his final message - a message lost in static and the wrenching
screams of a
guitar being tortured to death, the cruelest, coldest irony.
From the inside:
Every bar has it's inner worthlessness in the unsatisfying
aggression that
the top note releases in vain - a last desperate shot that falls
back on
one'sself, without so much as a ripple - just a tear.
Fading with a stupid, pointless self-driving riff that falls and
falls and
falls without moving, drives you deeperdeeperdown without the
slightest hint
of force except inertia, and closing on a failing heartbeat that
smashes
against the backs of your eyes, and fills your head with so much
emptiness.
So much power, so little effect. So are we all: just a
self-important
nothing, and in the end, the power can have no effect but to
destroy
itself - easier than to endure the futility of existence.
