JOHNNY CRYPT

"THE INTERVIEW" BY : UROTSUKIDOJI

U- I am going to ask you some "get to know you questions" for those Love/Hate fans out there that are not familiar with your work. You were a member of L.A. Guns (bass), how many CDs did you play on with them, and how long were you in the band?

JOHNNY- I originally played guitar in a band with Chris (the bass player in love hate) called boneyard.. Tracii Guns and Steve Riley saw us play at a club called F.M. Station, and when chris and i came off stage Tracii said "I want you guys in L.A.Guns" So I originally joined as a guitarist, Kelly Nickels (L.A.Guns bass player) quit and Tracii asked me if I'd consider switching to bass so we wouldn't have to deal with another guy in the band... So I switched. I did "American Hardcore", "Wasted", and "Shrinking Violets" with L.A. Guns.

U- What other known (and unknown) bands have you played with?

JOHNNY- I formed a band out here called Fatal Attraction in the 80's we were a horror glam vampire band.. I actually went to school for special effects makeup, so we had a pretty cool show.

U- Did you meet Jizzy in L.A. Guns or have you known each other from "back in the day" ?

JOHNNY- No jizz and i met in L.A. Guns.. We hit it off right away.

U- Lets cut to the chase, what the Love/Hate fans want to know is, are you (and Chris) making this your main band, or is it just something to tide you over till the L.A. Guns revolving door opens again, or some other project comes along?

JOHNNY- hahaha... No Way, We're in this for the count.. We're so fucking dedicated it's not funny.. there are guys that make a living jumping from band to band, and you know what, that's cool.. but it's not me. I'm here. ... L.A.Guns DID call me about a month ago and asked me to rejoin.. i told them no that I was working with jizz and Chris.

U- Everyone will want to compare you to Jon E. Love, so lets say on a scale of 1 to 10, that Jon's Guitar playing is a 10, where would you rate yourself.

JOHNNY- Well not to puss out or anything, but for what Jon E. Love does, he is a 10.. i have my own style, it happens to be in the same vein as Jon.. bluesy, funky.. actually I made a living back in Texas doing cover bands.. I did it for years.. I've learned all the solos and stuff note for note on the love hate stuff, the other night at rehearsal Jizz goes you know what, do your own thing Johnny.. if you copy everything note for note it'll sound like a weird love hate tribute band.. i laughed but i agree.. So I guess I'm a 10 at what I do.

U- Before joining the new Love/Hate were you a fan? Or are these tunes new to you?

JOHNNY- Some girl I knew back in the 80's gave me their blackout in the redroom tape.. I loved the band right away, they were and still are excellent musicians and amazing songwriters.

U- We have heard of a Japan and European tour coming, so I must ask. Any US (or Canada hint hint) dates in the near future?

JOHNNY- I'm sure we will.. We're all really excited about getting out there again, but no dates yet other than Japan.

U- Skid and the boys used to dance and worship the cross of the Budweiser, will this evil worship continue? Will it show up on tour?

JOHNNY- As long as it's evil we'll do it.

U- Love/Hate always billed themselves as the "Stupidest Band In The World". What's your thought on this title, will it still fit?

JOHNNY- Huh?

U- Have you thought of what tunes will be played live? If so, what do fans have to look forward to?

JOHNNY- Well here's what we have so far..

Blackout in the redroom
Fuel to run
Tumbleweed
Spinning Wheel
Straightjacket
Tranqulizer
Wasted in America
Spit
Boozer

And Monday we are going to do She's an Angel and i think Dope and superfragilistic.

U- Love/Hate fans are loyal, and will buy any new material they can, so that being said, when can we look forward to a new studio release from the band?

JOHNNY- well we are talking about demoing some new stuff in the near future, so hopefully not too long...

U- On a similar topic, are there any plans to merchandise this band? People still want T-shirts etc.

JOHNNY- Oh yeah, We will probably be selling t-shirts and stuff like that.

U- Jizzy said the next CD will have Jizzy songs and Skid songs on it, will you and Chris get a say in the writing? Do you care?

JOHNNY- Well it isn't so much that they are going to be Jizzy or Skid songs.. We just want whatever sounds the best to wind up on the cd.. We all talked about that.. of course we'll have part in the writing process, but again whatever winds up sounding the best is what the fans will get.

U- Did you go to Skid's painting party? If so, any kool stories? What all went down? If not, why not?

JOHNNY- Yes I did go... Skid and some people were in this room painting stuff.. We (Jizz, Chris and I and the girls) were hanging out watching people eat and drink. it was actually kinda tame, but the night was young.

U- Are Karen (Skid's wife, for the uninformed) and Josie (Jizzy's wife, for you people with no f**ken' clue) just as gorgeous in person as they are in cyber-space?

JOHNNY- now were talking scales from one to ten... they are both hotties... I'd say at least 12's or 13's

U- What are your musical influences? Those from when you started, and those that inspire you today.

JOHNNY- when i started it was Zeppelin and Kiss.. I listen to everything from Sly and the family stone to manson, So i get influenced by tons of different stuff.

U- What CDs do you play when you are on your own, and no one is around to hear? Any secrets?

JOHNNY- Best of james Brown, Sly and the family stone, mansons first 2, chilli peppers, stuff like that.

U- What's the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to you on tour?

JOHNNY- I got really stoned when L.A.Guns opened for Blue oyster cult and I didn't even realize I was on stage.. So I don't know if I was even playing the stuff or goofing or what the hell I was doing...

U- What's the best thing to ever happen to you on the road?

JOHNNY- Meeting all the fans on the road was and is the best thing that ever happened to me... oh yeah and i was with 2 chicks once..

U- Love/Hate has had a reputation as drunken, partying, hooligans, are you going to keep this rep alive? Or are you gonna be good little boys and drink your milk.

JOHNNY- Well you really can't mix alcohol in milk can you? so i guess we'll have to be drunken hooligans...

U- Assuming that the last response was not the milk choice, what's your favourite beer/drink? And give us your best "drunk rock guy" story.

JOHNNY- i like sam adams.. i was so drunk at this party once, i was on the floor laughing with my guitar tech, all of a sudden this chick grabs my arms and pulls me up off the floor and is pulling me into the bedroom... we go around the couch and i go ass first through the drywall... I'm laughing my ass off.. she pulls me out and takes me in the bedroom and throws me on a waterbed.. i just remember our manager carrying me out like a baby...

U- I'm going to name a band, you tell me your thoughts in 5 words or less:

L.A. Guns (today) : Survivors
Korn : Innovators
Kid Rock : Fucking Cool
Metallica : Surviving innovators
Motley Crue : I love the crue
Limp Bis? (whatever their name is) : Cool Contact lenses
Warrior Soul : Right on
Type O Negative : Creepy cool

U- Any message you want to give to the Love/Hate or L.A. Guns fans?

JOHNNY- Yeah whatever you want to do in life, go for it.. enjoy the music.
