DEC 1 '05 DPA disc, Not As Advertised!
Well, I don't even know what to say about this. Guitarist Jon E. Love, on the DPA web site message board, posted the following... The gist of it all is that Jon's disappointed in how the DPA project came together, and is not happy with the final product. However, the biggest news is that apparently, Joey Gold's drum work did not make it to the album! Here it is, straight from Jon's post:
"Ok here's the scoop on my involvement on DPA.inc. When Skid first approached me about recording his new songs I was interested in doing the project if it was done right. Right means, to have us do preproduction of the tunes with Joe, Skid and I learning the songs and having some input as to the arrangements and treatment of the catalogue the same as we did on Star in the Sun session (which was fun and I think came out great, it was great playing with Joe again) and every album we recorded prior to this. Unfortunately Skid was not interested in having a collaborative effort for whatever reason, i.e. budget, artistic control, ego, etc. When I laid down the guitar tracks I did them to horrible drum loops and half-ass vocal tracks with minimal direction from him. I did them in my home studio to keep his studio budget low. I constantly requested that the songs have Joe's drumming on them before I tracked my parts. Also I hated the immature lyrics and redundancy and let him know this. So essentially I worked for 2 weeks trying to get a passionate performance on them but I just didn't like the songs as they were. In the whole time I worked on them he showed up once for about 1 1/2 hours at my place. I tried to mimic and replace the existing gtr loops and main themes of the songs and wanted to go in to the studio to cut my leads with real amps miked instead of using a POD XT at home. Don't get me wrong the POD is cool but just doesn't talk like a real amp does. By this time Skid was rushing me to finish and him and I had some difficulties in communication. I was furious with him. Not only did I except an extremely low payment for my work but I felt like he was being unreasonable about the demands on me. Needless to say we had a falling out and I basically didn't want to be involved with it anymore. Then the final straw was when Rich Sharp made a deal with Skid that allowed unlimited studio time to finish the project and Joe was brought in to play his drums. Not one track of Joe's drumming made the record. I don't know why Skid couldn't see where he was missing the boat but if I was him I would have started the whole thing again with the nucleus of the project intact. i.e. the three of us recutting the songs from scratch. Now with unlimited studio access Skid took it as an open forum to play guitars on the songs and basically butchered my parts. If you listen to the songs it's pretty obvious which guitars are mine and which are his, hint: the hack tracks are him. I think Skid has good ideas about guitar parts but his proficiency is dwarfed by mine. No ego just fact. So in closing I need to make it clear that if we had had the chance to be more involved with the music I probably would have done it for free. Alas, Skid wanted total control so I said fuck it do it yourself. So yes I was involved with the DPA,inc product but am not proud of the results. Some things never change. All songs written by Skid, all talent by Skid, all everything by Skid, blah, blah, blah, do you see where I'm going with this? It's a shame because the magic of L/H rhythm section was never given a chance".
Jon E.
When ask who played drums if not Joey, Jon replied "His name is ACID".
There you have it... all I can honestly say is WTF, and who or what is Acid?
