How it all Began- In the early 1980's, a legondary Japanese anime/manga artist named Akira Toriyama was riding high on the success of his first major hit, Dr. Slump. The only problem was he had to follow it up. In 1984, Toriyama unleashed what would become his greatest work to date in the form of a manga comic entitled Dragon Ball. When it was time to convert it into an animates series, for no apparent reason the name was changed to Dragon Ball Z. Since that time, a sequel series aired in Japan called Dragon Ball GT. First released in the U.S. in syndication, the entire series now airs on Cartoon Network Under the Dragon Ball Z title. If you're a new-comer to DBZ, don't be surprised if you're utterly confused when you first watch this show. In Japan, a television series' season usually consists of 36 half-hour episodes. In the U.S. it's 26. For some reason, the U.S. distributor of the series decided to cut and splice the 36 episodes into the 26. This means a lot of information about the series was never aired domestically. As such, consider this article your introduction to the series.
