In preparing for a possible survival situation, an individual must consider the topic of personal protection for themselves and their family. If you are serious about making preparations, it makes good sense to arm yourself at least on some level. A great number of families will already have some sort of weapon in their homes. Regardless of the weapon you choose, the most important factor is that you feel comfortable with your weapon, and can handle it with good results.

***Before we discuss the various options of firearms available to law abiding citizens, let me first state that it is absolutely necessary for you to familiarize yourself with your local gun laws and to make sure you excercise your rights within the scope of these laws. Also, If you decide to own or even handle a firearm, it is essential that you exercise proper gun handling and and safety practices. Remember, as a gun owner you are responsible for your firearm(s) at all times, attended and unattended. With this said, lets move on. The first choice that you must make is whether you will choose a long gun (ex: rifle, shotgun) or a handgun (pistol). We recommend that you seriously consider becoming familiar with both, but this is a choice that you will have to make for yourself. Each type of weapon has it's own advantages and disadvantages. We will discuss them each in detail below.

Handguns

The truth is, that while some of what you see is realistic, the majority of it is not. Hanguns are more difficult to shoot than most people realize. They are intended to be used at close or at least reasonable distances. If you think that you could possibly find yourself in a situation where you will need to protect yourself indoors, across a room, or in a hallway, a handgun may be a good weapon choice for you. If you can imagine yourself at longer distances from your target or needing significant penetration for your target, you may want to consider the rifle option. Below are some suggestions of handgun models, makes and calibers that may be desireable to you.

"Autos"

Automatic handguns are chosen by military forces world wide as combat handguns. This is due to their capacity, fast cycling, reloading ability, etc. Automatic handguns may have a magazine capacity of anywhere from 6 to 17 rounds or more. Current maximum magazine capacity for new handguns is 10 rounds. There are however still many pre-ban high capacity magazines available on the market for you to upgrade you weapon's ammunition capacity. If you choose to arm yourself with an automatic handgun, be sure to stock up on spare magazines. This will allow you to reload your weapon fast if needed. Also, magazines do sometimes malfuction and even wear out. If you have spares, you will ensure the smooth function of your firearm. Automatic handguns are somewhat difficult to learn to shoot. If you have one you will need to dedicate yourself to spend some time practice firing your weapon, reloading it, and cleaning it as well. This will help you to become more comfortable with the weapon's operation and function. This will build your confidence with the weapon and will help you to achieve better results with it. Once you are comfortable with it, remember that you must maintain your skills. If you don't shoot for long periods, you will loose some of your ability with it. Occasional practice at minimum is essential.
