ARM YOURSELF?

In a survival situation, having the right equipment and supplies can make the difference between surviving and not. This page is designed to give you some valuable ideas of some supplies and equipment that you may find useful. The purpose is not to tell you everything that you will need or to tell you that you have to have everything on our list here. Again, these are just some suggestions to get you thinking and to hopefully get you one step closer to preparation.
To get started, think of the things that you use on a daily basis. If those luxuries were taken away due to a loss of power or dislocation from your home what equipment could you store that could substitute for these conveniences?

Cooking Supplies:

propane campstoveCamp stoves: There are many different makes and models of camp stoves available on the market for purchase. These can be wise investments. Explore the fuel options of the different models. Most are either fueled by a propane cylinder or by camp fuel. Some models may even be suited to burn regular gasoline. This can be convenient in stocking dual use fuels. Make sure that whichever model you choose that you stock plenty of the appropriate fuel. Even if you never find yourself in a survival situation, you will enjoy your using camp stove. Make sure to practice cooking on your stove to ensure that you are familiar with how to safely operate it.

Grills: In trying times, don’t overlook your backyard BBQ as a great way to prepare meals for yourself and family. The only consideration is that you must stock the appropriate fuel such as charcoal, LP gas, etc. If you use charcoal, don’t forget the starter fluid.

Cookware: This is probably something that you will not have to purchase because most people have sufficient cookware in their homes. Remember though, you have to clean your cookware and that requires water. In a survival situation, water could become quite valuable. Having small camping type pots and pans can make clean up easier and may help conserve water when cleaning. These can be added to your stock of larger kitchen cookware already on hand.

Medical

First Aid Kit: This is a must have. Spend some time thinking of possible needs. Include the following:
Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment, aloe gel, eye drops, bandages, gauze, tape, snake bite kit, needle and thread, dental floss, pain pills (ibuprofin, aspirin, etc), allergy medications, salt tabs, and any other supplies that you can think of that could be needed.

Prescriptions: If you use prescription medications, ask your doctor to prescribe for you to have extra amounts on hand. If you have to, tell your doctor that you lost your medication while on vacation and that you have to purchase more (or make a better reason!) It is wise to have at least a one month supply on hand.

Hunting fishing supplies:

Hunting: Firearms are covered elsewhere on this site but if you are looking for a weapon specifically for hunting, you may want to consider the 12 gauge shotgun. By changing the ammunition type, you can use a 12 gauge shotgun on anything from birds to deer. The trick is to select the proper ammunition for the job. If you are experienced, consider a long bow or compound bow.

Fishing: Reading this page will give you a great excuse to go out and buy that new fishing pole you’ve been eyeing. Seriously, having fishing supplies on hand can be a great way to keep food on the table. The most important factor is to know how to use you gear with success. Practice with your gear to gain skill at fishing (regardless of whether the was a risk of a survival situation or not!). Don’t forget nets, trot lines, and other devices for catching fish also.

Emergency:

military cfp-90 pack w/ poncho,liner,canteen,k-bar,first-aid kit, flares, flashlight, matches, emergency stove, heat tabs, etc. In the case of an immediate emergency, I recommend the preparation of an emergency kit. This kit should accompany you in the trunk of your car or anytime you leave your home for more than a short trip. If ever an emergency arises, you are not left empty handed. Below is a list to get you started.

A good knife is essential! First Aid Kit ( well stocked)
Emergency food rations (MRE’s or prepared food, usually a 1 or 2 day supply)
Knife (K-Bar, Buck, or some other solid blade)
Waterproof matches
Bottled water
Blanket
Flashlight
Emergency flare
Rope
Compact Handgun (this is optional. If needed, it will be the most valuable item in your rucksack. Better safe than sorry)
