New light on Tyne Bridge

The Tyne Bridge is to be lit up in all its former glory. A £200,000 scheme will restore the old-style lighting on Tyneside's most famous landmark.

Foot-and-mouth puts Dales at risk

Extra vets are brought in to the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a bid to contain a worrying cluster of the disease.

MAFF plans to bring 5,000 livestock carcasses from North Yorkshire for disposal at the Inkerman site in Tow Law, County Durham. Fourteen people are arrested during their desperate attempt to halt operations at the Tow Law site.

Vets inspect a prized herd of rare Beef Shorthorn cattle and deer at Raby Castle, Staindrop, County Durham, after foot-and-mouth was confirmed on a nearby farm.

The total number of outbreaks in the UK hits 1,629. More than three million animals have been slaughtered.
