HONG KONG

1998-2001
What do I love about this crowded, polluted, money crazed city you are probably wondering. I have been living in Hong Kong since September 1998 and have come to realize that the reason I chose it over any other Asian city is that I can really feel like a resident here - my color does not automatically make me a tourist. The benefits are great - active social life with people from all over the world, excellent boating, job opportunities you can't find elsewhere and some of the most interesting inconsistencies you could hope for.

I visited four times before moving here and became addicted over time. To view pictures from past trips click here.

Next to my apartment is the abandoned police living quarters. Since having this lifeless hulk in the neighborhood is seen as particularly dangerous, the offering at Ghost month are huge. There is a 24 hour frenzy of food, drink, and burnt offerings to appease whatever might be lingering in there. Hope it works!

On the way to one of Hong Kong's best boogies - Funky Times - I ran across our local Elvis. Anyone who has spent time here will probably recognize him as a long-time Lan Kwai Fong resident.

Mary, Michelle, and I celebrated the millennium with friends on Kowloon side so we could watch Central light up!

June 18th was Dragon Boat Festival in 1999 - rowing teams compete in memory of a righteous government official who drown himself in the fourth century. Though there aren't many fish left living in these waters to scare away, it's still a good excuse to have fun.
At Stanley Beach junk and junk after yacht after yacht lines up to watch the races so Michelle, Mary and I spent all day running from boat to boat sampling the best on offer.
In January 1999 my mom came for a visit and we went to some of the best sights around. This is The Big Buddha on Lantau Island - in fact the largest outdoor bronze Buddha sculpture in the world. The Buddha is on the grounds of Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery at the top of a steep mountain.
This is one of the famous "floating" restaurants you may pass if you float your yacht by the port at Aberdeen.
Yamcha (drink tea) is that great Cantonese meal where you eat more dimsum than should really fit in your stomach and then try desperately to wash it down with tea. This is the beautiful City Hall Restaurant in Central.
I used to live right in Central and smack in the middle of the local wet market (meat/veg). This view is literally from the front door of my building. Despite rampant cats and roaches and constant fish scales under foot, it was a great place to live. I always had fresh food and the night life is very nearby.
