SINGAPORE

2002
I have to immediately admit that I only spent a day in Singapore. I arrived during Chinese New Year so nearly everything was shut making it easier to get around but very difficult to spend money. Luckily I stayed in Little India where there was some activity if only men were out of doors.

When you fly into a new city and the aircraft doors open, you get your first sniff of that place. The first thing I smelled in Singapore was soap. I kid you not.

I arrived from Thailand in the evening and had a walk right away. Arab Street is not an empty name.

Sultan Mosque

As we went down the River past the Indochine restaurant at the Empress Palace Building my camera was going but what a great result.
While the Chinese population of Singpore stayed home, Little India had its usual bustle.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

This Chinese District Association building is typical of that weird colonial/Malaysia/Chinese gaudiness you in Singapore.
Back streets of the Muslim district were quiet too.
Naturally I had just missed the Chinese New Year Parade in China Town.
The lion dancers had long finished their duties.
Up the hill is one of Singapore's most happening bar areas - Club St.
As a city, they really have done a great job of preserving old structures - this one is practically in the financial district.
The day view across from Boat Quay.
